Doggy careers

Media, journalism etc. is absolutely out, as is teaching, I knew that from the start. Not my bag, very niche if I wanted anything to do with animals, there's already a million freelance copy writer type people who churn that stuff out free or cheap. I know one, her husband works a 60 hour week to keep her in the manner to which she is accustomed, she produces the odd paragraph for local advertising mags to justify herself. :p

I have a good contact/reference for publishing and related fields but it all swings back round to marketing, telesales, unpaid internships etc. and I know I would be deeply unhappy doing that kind of thing, although ridiculously both my degree and work experience are all centered around that. I have a guaranteed job offer in a related field, 17-18k pa start, flexible hours, not to be sniffed at but my stomach is clenching just at the thought of it.

Even forgetting the animals bit, anything that means I am not at a desk on a phone 9-5 every day would do! :)

Absolutely nothing to do with animals, but have you considered cleaning? I started with cleaning jobs because with young children and animals I needed a bit of flexibility, and although I don't need to be around now for the children, the work just fits in so well with the animals. It certainly won't make you a fortune, but is a better rate than supermarket work etc, and you can pick and choose where you go. A couple of jobs I have specifically wanted someone who didn't mind animals and the extra work involved and are happy to pay a bit more because of this.

BC, If the fire service is interesting you then I'd look into that a bit more.

When I had to call them out to my last mare who got stuck in a ditch they were great. Depending on the location, they do more animal rescues than you might think & they also have animal rescue specialists, who cover a larger area, get special animal training & attend all animal related call-outs in their area. Could add an animal interest to a interesting, varied & very rewarding job.

Hello,
I'm new to the site and was reading your post. I have been working for the past few years as a Dog Handler for a security company. Have you thought about this route? You would need a SIA licence, a very well trained dog as the dog could potentially save your life one day. (preferably a German Shepherd or a Malinois) Employers would also look for training with either BIPDT or NASDU.
This can be a very rewarding job but you would generally be working alone for very long hours normally overnight in all weathers.
I spent a year without seeing daylight :/

If you gave any questions please feel free to ask
:)
