Anyone used one of the DNA testing kits that you order online swab and send back?

Our pup is a rescue and I am dying to know a bit more about her breeding. I am pretty sure there is setter in there somewhere (amongst lots of other bits and pieces) but wondered if anyone has used them?

Found one here

but don't want to waste money on something people think is a pile of rubbish!

Here is a piccy incase anyone wants to hazard a guess!

Waste of time.
I know of several purebreds that have been tested for a laugh and not one was even half right.

Well a friend of mine who is a vet nurse did this for her rescue. He was clearly JRT cross something fluffy. Turned out to be a yorkie x JRT!. Think a fluffy JRT with yorkie ears.

They're not very reliable.

DNA testing is only really workable when there is already a breed database - my dog is DNA registered to prove he is the offspring of the dogs printed as sire and dam on his pedigree, who are also DNA registered on the same database.

I though Flatcoat in the first pic but she is very Setter-y in the second one.

I'd just enjoy your dog, whatever may be in there :)

Oh I definitely am! Just thought it might be fun to know as she was a stray. But we will just have to keep on guessing!

thanks guys :)

Emma86, I was the same as you! Very keen to know what my crossbreed had in him.
On his first visit to the vets they said chihuahua cross with various terriers.

I came across the DNA testing by chance, I read some awful reviews of some companies but then came across this, I think the reviews speak for themselves!!! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wisdom-Pane...8&qid=1365200829&sr=1-1&keywords=wisdom+panel
It's not cheap and you have to have faith! Here is a link to their website http://www.wisdompanel.co.uk/

Within a few days of purchase I received a rough swab, I then sent off the dogs details, they wanted age, sex and name.
Once they have the results they email and send you a link to view the breeds profiles, it really is interesting!

My boys results were chihuahua x smooth fox terrier one side and chihuahua x sealyham terrier on the other. When i read the characteristics it really did ring true!

As others have said it doesn't really matter what breeds they are as you will still love them the same. but if it gives us an insight in to their background and things that might turn them on/off thrn it is no bad thing in my opinion! Would do again and woud def reccomend!

If I have the log in details still (at work somewhere) you are welcome to look at the profile they sent me, just send me a PM

Although I agree possibly flatcoat cross from the first photo she is very narrow in front so I am thinking something hound like in the mix. Is she a very licky dog?
Does she carry toys around?
These are both v flatcoat traits
IMHO DNA tests are generally very wrong in mixed breeds

I would have guessed f/c retriever mix as well. Yes, also agree with the narrowness making her look hound like/ lurcher type. But if she's really young, she could just be not filled out.

My sister did a test on one of ours - confirmed pretty much what the rescues rough guess was (although we'd never guessed she had any otter hound in her....)

in a nutshell, a foxhound x lab ;)

Not sure I'd bother again though, you do hear some odd stories about them.

Either way, your dog looks lovely!

Thanks for everyones replies. Interesting to hear peoples experiences. Perhaps we wont bother with the kit. It is fun not knowing what she is going to grow into, or when she is going to stop growing!!

Yes she is a very licky dog, loads of energy, seems extremely intelligent (almost too much!) VERY playful and thinking about it yes she does carry her toys round with her. But when we are out she would much rather be sniffing round 'finding things' than fetch toys that I throw.

Were just working on recall at the moment...All is ok as long as there arent any other canine distractions!

See cocker and flattie.

We think we have a flat coat x rottie he's bonkers but fantastic but very very bonkers!!!

Would love to see a pic of that! :D

OP, I'd say there's definitely some flat coat in there but he also has a very setter-like face, which reminds me a bit of a Gordon Setter.

We remember a flat coat in the house we got him. Tried contacting "breeders" number doesn't work. He loves showing off his favourite toys and is very licky thinking about it. Goes off tracking hence flexi, and is very clever.

Depends I have a lab cross and reg walk with a full lab and people do tell the difference he is a lot bigger and then soon as you say rottie x every one says oh yeah, he's like a black rottie. Which to me he almost is I always thought his carrying toys about was a rottie thing perhaps not. And when he retrieves things he doesn't always bring back he would rather go show everyone what he has got first lol. Which is a very flattie thing to do, well the flat coat where I pick up in a shoot does that, first gets stupidly excited found, que a big happy bounce and then shows people what he has until giving to frantic owner recalling him lol.

Pure accident we have him really but love him to bits never a dull moment with him but never an off button either.

Thats really interesting, Lola does this too. She will go 'fetch' and be on her way to bring it back and either parade it round or get distracted and track something else! I cannot let her off the lead so we use a flexi too as she gets too distracted by other things. She will come when called 50% of the time as long as there isnt something more exciting around. Were working on this in training classes but if this is a breed trait it makes me feel a little better that I'm not just being a rubbish owner!

The carrying and parading may be as much to to with the Rottie breeding Toffee, if you look at Emma's pics of her Rottie Cara doing bitework, as like a GSD or Doberman, when the dog wins the sleeve, or pillow or whatever, they carry/run with it, usually with chest puffed out and tail wagging :p And ideally, bring it back to you and let it go when you ask :p
