Doggy mystery

So tonight I took my spaniel up the fields to turn the horses out. Normal routine except the bl**dy companion pony did a runner out the gate so I spent a good 10 mins trying to retrieve him from the paddock I’ve desperately trying to rest. Spaniel running about but keeping his distance as he learnt the hard way about horses as a puppy (got chased by a Shetland but was ok). Pony retrieved and plonked back in the correct field. I went back to the yard with the dog. He came into the stable where I was mucking out visibly distressed. Shaking and wanting to go back to the house. His breathing was shallow and rapid, gums pale, tail between his legs and kept trying to bite his back.
He is sound, no visible signs of injury. We’ve had a good feel of him and he’s not reacting to anything. I immediately thought he’d been bitten by a snake. We do have adders locally but no bite marks. Phoned the vet and they said to monitor him, see if he’d eat (he did eat dinner) and if he got any worse bring him in.
As the evening has progressed his breathing has returned to normal, his gums are back to normal colour and he’s not as distressed as he was although he’s still feeling very sorry for himself and is a little quiet.
I can’t think what must have happened to him. My partner says it’s almost like he’s had a bad fright somehow. He can be a bit dramatic but nothing like this.
Has Anyone else experienced anything like this?

The pony bombing about possibly gave him a good scare, he’ll remember the Shetland incident. He will have wanted to get to you but been unable and that will have stressed him out. Give him a little snuggle but also keep him to normal routine so it doesn’t become his go to emotion near horses
