So my malamute HATES having his nails trimmed, he is mostly walked in fields so they don't wear down naturally much and today he had to be sedated at the vets to have them trimmed. I know there are nail files for dogs but wondered if anyone had used them and how good they are? As a big dog his nails are really thick.....

How much noise do these make? I've been thinking of getting one but my little terrier's very noise-sensitive so if they're noisy I don't think I have a huge chance of getting it near her!

..I also use a dremmel on my larger dog...I stand astride him, facing backwards, and lift his feet as you would a horse....gently tap the nail, stroking towards the outside of the foot.My dog used to hate having his nails cut with the clippers but happily takes the dremmel. If you do it every two weeks ,the nails never need more than a few seconds each...I use the traditional clippers on his dew claws and this is accepted.
For my tiny dog I'm finding cat nail scissors are fantastic, and easily manipulated in a small space..
remember whatever system you choose,to gradually get the dog used to the noise of the dremmel,do one or two nails the first time and reward well....build up to it and end on a good note.
...also have some styptic powder at hand ,just in case you do cut too short...
Re noise...the small, mini dremmel are less noisy but I doubt they would be the best for a big dog...I use the small work dremmel, which is a bit noisy, but mine are used to a power dryer noise so don't object...

Sanding drum on a dremel but put the nails ends through a stocking so the hair cannot catch or use a file made for artificial human nails.
Hold the nail secure wilst you file.

If you go for a nail file the dog ones are rubbish. I asked my nail tech last week and she said get a human nail file but get a 80/80.
