I have recently found 2 dogs, they are about 3 years old and we still have them while we are trying to find their owner. How can I discourage them from chasing the cats and barking at them?

Obviousley be very carefull and dont leave them unsupervised......which im sure u wont anyway.

When I bring new dogs into the house I always allow them to see the cats but at the same time they are unable to get to them..........I either crate them......or put them in the kitchen behind the baby gate..........so her presence becomes familiar and less of an exciting comotion.

You could try a long line.........this would probably test your patience with 2 of them..........basically allow them to approach the cat on the long line and rerimant any unwanted or frenzied behaviour...with a good sharp tug and a very loud command...LEAVE.
OR
A water pistol with a bit of lemon juice..........squirt them when they show the unwanted behaviour.........with a command i.e LEAVE.
Praise them at times they ignore the cat.....treat/voice praise.
OR
Depending on how long you have them/if u keep them.........a citris collar with remote control...........to squirt them when they show unwanted behaviour.
I have one on a dog at the moment to stop him whinging....and its worked a treat............I had a whole mornings sleep after my night shift

I'll probably get shot down for admitting that we have never been able to stop 2 of our border terriers 'hunting' the cat - vigilance and the cat keeping to areas that they can't get to has saved her so far.

You're not alone.... my poor one eyed, three legged cat (nothing to do with the dogs!) is only safe because he has a system of baby gates in the house to keep the dogs off him. He knows he has about 5 seconds to get from the lounge to the cat flap and can run faster than a three legged cat ought to be able to!
