Dogs and Chickens

Depends on the dog!

If it has been raised with livestock and has been trained properly you should be OK. I wouldn't do it with my two, for sure, but I know other dogs who would be fine with it.
Dogs are dogs, they are descended from wolves and are prey animals, but some are more laid back than others

Hmm....maybe, maybe not! Helpful eh?

My old dog would bark and run the hens, but he wouldn't have dreamt of eating them. Our Border Collie likes to herd them up, but again wouldn't dream of eating them. However, lots of dogs would like to kill them!

I guess you won't know until you try. I've introduced our puppy to the hens and he's thankfully scared of them....not sure if he'll carry that respect/fear into adulthood though.

Tinks was raised with chickens, ducks and the geese gave her a healthy respect for poultry as a pup

so she is safe with them

It would depend on the dog...

All of ours have been with chickens no problem - that includes two greedy goldies

I don't remember training them, they never went for them. Wierdly, since the hens have been penned in Yellow Dog has fixated on them but when he goes in to the pen he ignores them!

Oz (JRT) used to run loose unsupervised with hens, ducks, turkey and geese and won't have dreamed of touching them..............however as he hasn't been in that environment for a while I don't know that I could trust him now (though probably would get 100% trustworthy again if reintroduced and watched carefully initially)!

Sooo in short I think it depends on the dog and how they are brought up.
