Now that I am about to take in a big dog I have been having a bit of a panic about her opening the front door ! Our old setters used to be able to push down the lever handles on the internal doors, which we had to change to knobs, but I don't think I want to have to change the front door ! Also one dog twice managed to turn on the gas hob and flooded the house with gas, OH was asleep at the time, lucky it wasn't permanent ! We had to remove the knobs from the cooker. Knobs on new hob don't come off. Ive been spoiled with a smallish dog that cant reach anything, interesting times ahead !
 
We had to have strategic kitchen bin placement in our old kitchen (no larder etc for it to go in) as a certain whippet who will remain nameless would use it to climb onto the sides and eat whatever was cooling at the back of the work surface out of reach!
 
Its when Im out MoC Im worried about, I tried double locking the door, nipped round the end of the terrace and in the back to see if I could open door from inside and I could !
Maybe this one wont be clever enough
 
I have to have extra locks on my internal doors as my beagle can open doors and open the freezer!
For the external doo, can you fit a yale latch or a chain perhaps?
 
Are you really expecting an older dog like this to open doors Snuffles? Have you asked the owner if she has done such a thing in the past? I am interested that so many have dogs that open doors as I have never had one!
 
I had a sneaky devil who initially would open & leave through the front door. His disappearance would be quickly discovered & he'd be returned home. So ... he got wise to us spoiling his fun. He'd open the back door first, then go out through the front door - meaning the draft from the back door would close the front door behind him & he'd have more time before we realised he was gone!!
 
I wouldn't be too worried, unless she has previous! My setter opens doors, but I was pre-warned that it was a trick he'd perfected. He's too busy snoozing to bother most of the time!

Me neither Chiffy - it wouldn't occur to me that a dog would bother doing something like that. Maybe boxers, whippets, greyhounds and lurchers are just lazy :D
 
My old ESS used to open the bedroom door so she could get on the bed and sleep during the day whilst I was out. I still have the handle reversed on that particular door, every time I go to open it I remember her with a smile!
 
Yes have previously had two setters that could open doors ! This proposed new dog does get herself up on her hind legs even though she is an old lady.

Our boxer would regularly open the door and let them all out. In fact you can ask the collie to do it for you if you get locked out which is quite handy. Luckily my parents keep it double locked and now I've moved out this one has a different catch.
