I'll start with the background/history if that's ok...
A couple of years ago our dog went into anaphylactic (sp?) shock after an allergic reaction to a cherry and almond cake. (certainly not her normal food, being the terrier/terror she is she nicked it from the kitchen table

) All her fur fell out, her skin became red and irritated and we were told to 'say our goodbyes' to her on several occasions as the vets on the intensive care ward thought she wasn't going to make it.

Last year our dog had gastric problems and part of the treatment was a shot of antibiotics into her neck. A few days later she scratched and scratched the area which had become swollen and red, and we thought she was going the same way as the 'cake incident'. Our vets thought she had had a reaction to the antibs.
Last week she went to the vets who diagnosed her as having mild arthritis. They gave her a jab in the neck (I think it was anti inflammatory, but can't remeber perfectly) and sent us home with some pills. She was a bit 'down' all week but I put that down to being started on pills (once she managed to spit them out three times even when they were hidden in sausage!) but today I went to take her for her walk and her bed was covered in blood and pus, looks as though she has had an abcess in the injection site - the same as last year. So down to the vets, a shaven dog around the irritated site and £130 later (sunday call charge of course

) she is still scratching it frantically. The vet is completely dumbfounded by her.

So (getting to the point now) does anybody have any experience of anything like this? Is it possible for dogs to have an allergic reaction to needles?
Worried and concerned about what the implications might be for the future if she does.

Have a look under vaccinations post. My bitch had a similar abscess after her booster. Didn,t burst but she now has problems with her joints. Had hoped she was on the mend but after 2 days off painkillers stiffening up again. Going back in tomorrow for fluid to be drawn off joints for more tests. Not the same as yours but does appear to all be linked to the injection so might be of interest. I am now getting really worried because after 12 days on antibiotics she still has very high white blood cell count. Fingers crossed for me and her please.

I had to take my dog to the vets again today (took her there yesterday!) as she is now in the full blown stages of some sort of reaction. Her eyes are puffy and weeping, her skin is red and blotchy with purple patches, she's running a temperature and her fur is starting to fall out. I am so worried about her now as she has had this before and ended up spending a week in intesive care at the vets.
The vets have given me anti-histamine tablets for her and told me to come back on wednesday, is there anything else people would reccommend for her, even if it was just to make her more comfortable??

Can't offer any advice really but thinking of you. Mine is at the vets today having her joint taps and I'm sitting waiting for the phone to ring. Is it possible your dog could have some sort of auto immune condition ? Good luck, hope she improves soon.

Thank you. I had to take her back to the vet this morning as she has scratched all of her skin and it is raw and bleeding. Vet is concerned about losing the tissue around the abcess site, and also by the damage she is doing herself. Vet reluctantly gave her another jab (this time steroids, and in her bum!) and she is now at the vets full time on a drip so they can keep an eye on her as she hasn't eaten either.
We have had her tested for allergies in the past, and she came back as being allergic to wheat. Will ask the vet about auto-immune diseases, at the moment the focus is on getting her to pull through.
