The BBC has put a story on their News site about 10 dogs (2 adults and 8 puppies, from at least two different litters) being found in a bag in a river. Sadly they were all dead, and a similar incident happened in the same place last year, with 5 dogs found (it is a sad story but no gruesome details):

With two adults plus puppies being found it can't be that the puppies were born dead and the bitch died in labour, and the RSPCA says they all appeared to be healthy. All but two of the 15 dogs were French Bulldogs (the other two are described as 'terriers') which I though commanded high prices? Has the bottom fallen out of the designer puppy market? If they were drowned intentionally then I really hope that Karma exists, and that the police find the culprits.

It's just reminded me that years ago I was driving through a wooded area and saw a man pull over into a gateway, and surreptitiously swing a black plastic bag into the trees. I drove on for a bit but was so worried that it might contain puppies/kittens (when I was a child I had heard far too many scare stories about how unwanted ones were disposed of 😱) that I turned around and went back. After finding somewhere safe to stop I climbed over the gate and finally managed to untie the bag only to find... a load of dirty nappies 🤮 I still have no idea why someone would dump that in a beautiful wood next to a road that goes past the council tip, but I am still glad I checked as I think it would have weighed heavily on my mind.

I will always stop and investigate if I see a bag on a verge that wouldn't normally be there (not in a fly tipping area) because I think it could contain an animal. People are incredibly cruel.
I turned the car back about 1/4 mile the other day because I saw an squirrel that had been run over before I passed it and its tail was still twitching so I stopped the car and deliberately ran back and forwards over it. I can't bear the thought of something dying in agony or suffocating in a bag. I don't get upset about killing half dead roadkill anymore because I've done it lots of times and because I know I am doing them a favour.
