Dogs and Ticks?

Any ideas to stopping ticks? We have a Basset Hound who is always in the undergrowth and gets covered in them, it doesnt help we live in woodlands (mainly pine) and there are masses of deer.

We've tried frontline flea and tick treatment, but it didnt do much!

Now what? any ideas greatly appreciated for this poor little dog...
 
Ick. I sympathise having got a horse who picked a tick up this week and a Golden Retriever who loves muddy boggy tick infested places...

Regularly defleaing her helps, she also wears a brown tick colour, but I can't say that does any good....
 
Don't try to pull them out unless you have the proper tweezers for that job, normal ones won't do as they'll leave the head in and cause trouble.
You can also paint them with nail polish remover, doesn't harm the dog and they will shrivel up and drop out.
 
I am still waiting for Otto to be covered in them - We live on a farm with Sheep, and he is walked in woodlands overrun with deer, yet I haven't seen one! I even have a Tick hook ready and waiting!

He is treated with Advocate which doesn't do Ticks, so I am unsure why he hasn't picked any up.
 
Thanks all, Garlic is awesome, it can be used for everything!!! There is another thread going on here saying garlic is a no no for dogs... im not convinced but not an expert so...

However, it does stink, and if the nail varnish doesn't harm the dog, then its worth a go...

We use Vaseline on the horses if they get ticks which seems to work, suffocates them, but unfortunately, dogs have the tendancy to chew, lick and scratch, so it doesn't last five minutes plus their coats are longer so its harder to completely cover the little blighters!

Ill try the nail varnish and add some garlic to the food hopefully that'll help...

You could also try Advantix http://www.advantix.info/ from the company who do Advantage flea control, again a spot on. I've used the normal Advantage (they also do Advocate for lice, flea, tick (everything really!!)) for years and swear that it's better than frontline even! But I think it is a POM medicine so would need to get a prescription or get it from the vets, whereas frontline is now general licence so can be bought without prescription.
 
I'd suggest investing in a tick hook - best invention ever that lets you remove them quickly and easily without leaving the head in. You should be able to get one for a couple of pounds or so.
 
When you use the tick hook, it comes out with a resounding POP!
Then you can squash or better still flush the little so and so's down the toilet!
Garlic is in the onion family which is bad for dogs, everyone has their own ideas on this though but I'd never feed mine any, it's up to each person to read up on it and decide for themselves.
