Dogs at Burghley

I dont think dogs should be banned. I agree that less people would come to the events due to noone to look after the dog and if theyre well behaved and your a sensible owner why not? Instead people with unruly dogs should be asked to leave as suggested before.... Im sure then theyd get the message

I certainly wouldnt go if dogs were banned. I love taking Yellow Dog round he he enjoys the day. The only time he got remotely excited at a horse is when a loose one came directly at us when were at Hartpury  but once he realised the size of it he backed off :p

Theres always a debate about dogs after these events but never one about kids and people with pushchairs. Having come away with bruised ankles from mothers using pushchairs to ram other people out the way, kids running into people, small loose ones tripping people up....

Maybe they should ban kids too!

OR, they can really spoil the enjoyment of it for some people.

I love dogs, I have two, but I really resent paying all that money to go and spectate and then being subjected to yapping, (every time a horse comes past, or a whistle goes off), dogs scrapping, leads getting tied around my legs, it being ten times harder to get a good view of a fence because someone has hogged all the space for their fat labs, seeing distressed dogs who are tired and unfit being dragged around, or worse still puppies who are too young for it all, oh and in the tradestands it is a nightmare, not to mention spending the whole day trying to avoid stepping in the poos that people don't clear up.

THIS. Too many flipping dogs in the tradestand area (and I have two dogs who both stayed home) . . . my girls and I had walked the course all day (got to the showground at 7.30) and went to the tradestand area for a sit down prior to heading to our hotel . . . saw three spaces on one of the benches, the other end of which was occupied by a man with his lab puppy spread out in front of the remaining empty seats . . . went to sit down and he made no effort to move his dog . . . even when asked politely by my eldest (who said "excuse me, please may we sit here?" Rudeness.

I don't mind them out on the course if they behave (no yapping and no getting loose) and if their owners pick up after them . . . but do they really belong in the already cramped tradestand area for people to fall over and/or step on? I would actually have worried about stressing either of mine out by taking them into such a crowded environment - how pleasant is it for them to get jostled and/or stepped on like that? Doesn't make for a pleasant social experience either way, does it?

I think there should be a blanket ban on dogs at such events. I have a dog and wouldnt dream of taking her.

They just get in the way. It annoys me most when people with dogs insist on getting front row action around the course and take up loads of room!! and I hate watching it on TV, you can always hear something yapping. Its really not fair on the horse and riders.

I like that the only people defending dogs at such events are those that take their dogs. Everyone else gets fed up with them.

I get fed up with tall people at the events as I can't see past them!

I don't think people should be made to leave their dogs at home - we left home at 9am and didn't get back until 9pm. Its not fair to leave my dog at home for that long.

But, my dog is VERY well behaved. Doesn't yap, or pull or anything. I think the majority of the dogs there on Saturday were fine. Just a few that spoil it - but I think the same can be said for people. There was a couple by one fence having a huge row - I think thats way more annoying than a dog taking up a bit of space.

As for the trade stands, we didn't take him there. My husband sat with him whilst I went shopping. There IS a dog creche, so there isn't actually a need for the dogs to be dragged through the shops.

As said below I also have a dog, I get someone to check on her when I go out.

Actually, it would be better if people had to pay admission for dog entry. The tall person and the people having a row paid to be there, your dog in the way of my feet didn't. I shouldn't have to walk around looking at the floor incase I stand on your dog, or worse your dog poo!!!

Fine if you have the luxury of someone to check on them - We don't as we have recently moved to a new area and don't know anyone.

Children under 12 don't pay either - maybe people with buggies or large picnic rugs should pay more too.

Ban dogs? Ban kids? Nah. They should ban everyone who isn't me. Honestly, I ask you, these people out enjoying themselves in a way that is not absolutely identical to the way in which I enjoy myself. Wearing clothes I don't like! Eating picnics noisily! Getting piddled on Pimms! It's a disgrace, I tell you! Ban the lot of them!:p

Haha, I agree with you fully!!!

Ha ha ha ha . . . I like you!

All the county shows I went to this year have banned dogs. It was so much easier to walk around the place! I am not a doggy sort of a person- but aren't crowds of legs and other dogs and lots of smells very threatening to the dogs? I can't see them enjoying themselves!

I agree with no dogs in trade stands!! They're crowded enough as it is!!

Don't forget that Pedigree Chum sponsors the event- dogs will be there as long as the money is!!

Baring in mind most people that go to these events (family’s, couples etc) it's a great opportunity to done the wellies and bring the dog out for the day (weather permitting due to the breed of dog you have that is) it's a time to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise and admire the English countryside yet it’s combined with a great horse event, we certainly pay for it, how much to do these events and the trade stands make out the 1000’s of spectators that travel all over the country to support the sport, if they ban you from taking dogs then they might as well ban you from taking small chidren for goodness sake...what a ridicules thing that would be, yes both can be equally annoying and be a distraction and danger at times but if kept under control and the parents nd dog owners have some common sense then there’s no problems.

What I do think would make people be more careful (as in not letting the kids hold the dogs or perhaps keep the dogs away from the sides of the XC course) is it fine owners that let their get loose onto the course, bob a few signs up reminding folk to keep dogs under control.

I left my dog at home on all 4 days. On Saturday and Sunday because I knew they would be long days I bribed a friend from work to come and take him for a walk during the day and he was perfectly fine (I also made sure he had his kong and some toys to dismember while he was alone).
I notice that everyone says their dogs were well-behaved and I'm sure yours was but that's not the whole story. I saw lots of dogs that were very well-behaved but still looked thoroughly miserable being dragged round by their owners on a hot day.
It's all very well saying that it is only a minority that spoil it for other people but they do spoil it and it is only a matter of time before a loose dog causes a serious accident. As it is impossible to only let in "well-behaved" dogs then the answer is a blanket ban on dogs.

My dog would be far more miserable being locked up at home for 12 hours! He had a great time...loved his long walk.

I think its rubbish to suggest dogs should be banned. It would take away a lot of character of the events.

I do understand that it can become annoying if the dogs get loose and that owners should be more responsible. But the same can be said for people with young children.
