I have nothing against dogs on the yard, provided they are under control (either tied up, or come to call - preferabley no matter who calls) and don't chase/bark at the horses etc.

I don't have a dog, but do take them down with me when I dog sit for friends (the 2 i usually take down don't bother with the horses but i keep them on the lead at all time, mainly because i'm worried about loosing them) and my sister takes the in-laws dogs down, but they just follow her around.

The YO and YM also have several dogs between them, all but 2 are locked up, and only one is loose at all times because she doesn't like being shut in, but she normally just falls asleep in the hayleg.

The reason i'm asking is one of the liveries keeps brining her 2 terriers down, she only lets them loose when the YM isn't there. They don't really do anything, but they get in the way, and they don't really go back to her when she calls them. Twice i've had them around Blues legs (once in the school and she made no effort to come grab it - just stood at the gate and called, telling me to carry on....I couldn't because i had no idea where the dog was other than under me somewhere) Talking to the YM when she got back earlier and one of them has also gone for her 2year old daughter (who she ended up taking upstairs for a bit while the terriers were about, putting her behind in jobs.)....*mini rant over*

So what do you all think?

We're allowed dogs up the yard as long as they get on with the YOs dog. We haven't had any problems with them getting in horses ways, and I always keep an eye on where he is. If there are people riding in the school, I do put him on the lead (just in case he ran through!). We're not a big yard, so it is easy to kind of second guess what people are doing and making sure the dog doesn't cause any trouble

There's only 3 of us with dogs, and usually never more than 2 there at time, even that is rare. Usually only 1, due to us all coming up at diffferent times.

My yard doesn't like dogs there and if you bring them they have to be on a lead or in the car. My old yard was a free for all, dogs running round everywhere, getting in the way, chasing horses etc. It was a total nightmare!

The livery should either be told to lock her dogs in an empty stable while shes around, keep them on a lead or not to bring them at all!

There are three dogs that visit my RS regularly. Duke and Daisy, the YM's lovely soppy dogs who come to call, and most of them time are zonked out on the office floor getting cuddled by everyone! Theres also a visiting instructors little aged JRT, who does whatever she says and always gives you the sad eyes in an attempt to get some of your lunch. These dogs are all impeccably behaved, and NO dogs are allowed into the school, in fact the only dog that's ever near the school is the ageing JRT.

Supposed to be on a lead and clean up after them, but certain liveries seem to have special dispensation to let theirs run wild (and we are not talking small dogs - german shepherds and labradors)!

Meant to be on leads and clean up after them but as happens some do some don't.
I do get sick of folks dogs running round yards/fields.I have 2 dogs myself but don't take to yard as a rule cos too much as well as 3 horses

one of the yards i was on welcomed well behaved dogs - but mine got poisoned :(

and i dont think it was an accident either...

anyhow. My next horse ineed to be ona yard that allows dogs - mine is lovely and always on alead and loves everyone(except kids...)...(shes scared of them )

So yeah.... as long as dogs are under control and on a lead - i have no issues.

We don't have a definite rule but dogs stay in cars for the most part or are on their leads. On occasions if there is no-one else about at all (very small yard) dogs are allowed briefly off their leads (my SBT likes jumping jumps in the manage lol)

we have a no dogs policy on the yard we can tie them up in car park or they are in the car. YO has 2 dogs both are quite protective but sensible and stay out of way of horses or are tied up in the haylage barn. It makes it simple and stressfree for horses and riders

Only been on one yard where it was supposed to be a no dogs rule but I had permission from YO when parents were away. Jack is scared of/doesn't bother with horses, never went out of sight and comes to call. He was only ever loose in my field. Before we left my field he was on a lead and stayed there.

I won't let Quila off around horses until I trust her, if I don't trust her like I trust Jack she'll stay tied up/on a lead. Simple.

Well, it's my yard and I have 5 dogs in total, only one of them contained so to speak; the other 4 free range all over the farm, together with my 2 cats and sometimes neighbours dogs. Other dogs are welcome, providing they don't wind up mine and don't make a mess/nick bandages/jump on people/chase cats etc.

Well as long as they don't do this too often, I don't really mind! ;)

The livery should either be told to lock her dogs in an empty stable while shes around, keep them on a lead or not to bring them at all!

The YM eventually asked her to put them in the car so she could let her two out of the stable they'd been shut in while they were out. She got one in and the other proceeded to wander back off across the yard with her following it, calling it and making half hearted attempts to grab it. (i'd have had it by the scruff of the neck the second it tried to ignore me, but thats just me) Even when the lil girl got back (who loves dogs) she didn't make an effort to shut them up.

Our YO has 2 dogs and they are well behaved and all horses are well used to them. Worst they do is getting under the farriers feet to get the hoof trimmings and occasionally burying the odd Bonio or dead rabbit in your bedding or asking politely to drink from your horse's water bucket!

Other liveries bring down their dogs and our only problem has been in the past with one girl's 2 dogs (and she's now left). She let them cr*p everywhere on the yard and wouldn't clean up after them unless she was told to, she would let them go in the school with her and also all round the haylage bales. Now the YO's dogs have been known to do this but as they were regularly walked I don't think they were as bad or as frequent or maybe I've just not seen them doing it. Another livery has a quite lively large dog but she comes to call immediately and also we all sort of know how to push her away if she gets a bit exhuberant as she loves greeting people and we all quite like her really I think! My horse is very wary of her though as she is quite big. Someone else just taken on another large dog but she's not let it loose on yard yet as training it as she's not sure how it is with horses so she comes to the yard to walk it in the local fields. So overall people I'd say on our yard are sensible and considerate of their dogs behaviour.

Unfortunately they are allowed to run riot on our yard. Most are not a problem. The YM has three dogs and you wouldn't even know they were there most of the time but there are others that come down that are a complete pain in the a*** and I get a bit fed up really. If they are allowed to run round my youngsters legs well then they are most likely going to get squished I'm afraid. The main thing that winds me up tho is the mess. Not everyone picks it up and every week without fail ill be trying to get it out of my dubarrys which I keep in the car. Its not really on for the rest of us I don't think. I also have unfortunate position of keeping my hay first by the door so they all run in and p*** up it!! If I'm there they shout at them lol and act shocked - I know full well they do it everytime!! I feel better now. I do like dogs really buy think this is a bit out of line maybe I need to go on that miserable old women programme?

mine dont move from my side - i have 2 german shepherds - they walk to heel next to me. they are not on leads but i have spent hours training and they do not wander around - we are all on ind grazing so come into my field then they can run round to hearts content - do their 'business' - which i pick up whilst poo picking - my horse not bothered with them - if she goes near them they walk away from her as i have trained them to. When I bring horse in they walk on my left and horse on right hand side. I put them in car and then take horse into barn.

There are some liveries whose dogs do run riot round the yard but no-one says anything - if we go to yard and other dogs there that come running over i tell mine to lie down and stay which they do, while other owner make half hearted attempt to call their dog back which is manic labrador and runs round horses etc

My yard is part of a military sports centre and all dogs must be on a lead at all times. They can be tied up as long as you are around (i.e. not left tied up while you bog off for hours on a hack!), or left in the car. There is no official rule about clearing up after them but most people are responsible and do it anyway. Some people still think it doesn't apply to them though, but if the Commandant is about he can be nasty about it!!!

It is the only rule I have, Absolutely NO dogs.:)

I have three Guard dogs (in a run during the day) who would go beserk at intruders, several barn cats that I don't want being chased, and a goat that would think nothing of cornering a strange dog and doing it serious injury.

For the sake of all concerned it wouldn't be worth the hassle, and/or Vet's bills and recriminations.

Dogs have recently been banned on our main yard but there's three of us on a separate DIY yard (same owner but 500yds across the road and down a lane) and two of us bring our dogs there.

The main yard ban has been a huge pain as my horse is currently out in a field beyond that yard, and as I refuse to leave a dog in a car on a hot day I simply can't take her down there with me to check on the horse during the summer months. Annoying as there's several excellent walks nearby but I have to make two car journeys, one to feed the horse and then back home again to pick up the dog.

In the winter she's tied up on the yard while I muck out, then we go for a nice yomp across the fields. The other dog who comes is off-lead but very small, obedient and no trouble with the horses. As always, it's those lazy individuals who don't pick up after their dog and make no effort to train them that ruin it for everyone else...

Well I have DIY liveries and because we've got sheep in the field (not ours - owned by a tenant farmer who rents the field) we have to be strict about them.

They must be "under control" at all times, and on the livery agreement it says clearly that the farmer has the right to shoot any dog he sees worrying sheep.

Also they must pick up after it and dispose of same.

Dogs are allowed on our yard but must be on a lead. The only exemption is the YO dog but, as he lives there, I think that is fair enough.

I have been on yards where dogs have just been allowed to run riot and it was not nice. Can't understand why anyone would want to let their dog run around unsupervised when there are extremely large animals to tread on them.

I don't have a dog myself, but they are allowed on our yard as long as they are on leads. It would be so much simpler if there was a no dog rule though because it causes so much trouble. Some people keep dogs on lead but there are a few that seem to think they are exempt. Others keep their dogs in the car and they bark constantly which drives me insane. No one ever clears up the s**t and as soon as people walk to the fields the dogs come of the lead.

My horse does not like dogs in her territory and would probably kill one if she could get close enough. Its quite scary to watch, but people still let their dogs run around her field.

Grrrr!

The more the merrier :p

We are only a small yard of 7 horses and we all have dogs, as does YO & neighbour, who's dogs regularly wander over.

We aren't all ever there at the same time, which would be chaos!

But all of the dogs get on famously, are well behaved, fairly sensible & come to call immediately. They have free run of the yard & we all pick up after them.

However, we are all also very, very aware as owners, which I think helps. If it gets busy on a saturday morning, or horses are tied up outside, farrier is there etc, dogs get put on leads or into cars/stables.

It works for us :D

They used to be allowed on our yard so long as they didn't bother the horses, and quite a few of the liveries brought theirs up, they all got along and it was quite nice having them. But, of course, people spoiled it by not picking up their dogs' *****, and there are now no dogs allowed on the yard at all.

At the start my yo was happy for dogs to be on the yard, most of us kept our dogs on leads or in the car. However one of the liveries had 4 out of control dogs that she would let run about whether horses were on the yard or not. One day another livery was getting on her horse, just as she was mounting the dog went for her horse and she shattered her elbow.

I have 2 dogs and never take them to the yard as the horses are my 'me' time. However YO has now said only dogs that get on with hers are allowed on yard, must be put on lead when on yard and if horses there they must be kept in car.

Drives me crazy having dogs running all over the place, going to the toilet in the hay/haylage etc people not picking up after them ahhhh

Dogs are allowed on our yard, but it must be guaranteed that there will be no fouling - or all traces are removed ASAP! I take my dog up only after her mornings walk and I've not been in any trouble :D

YO is suspicious of any male dogs as she doesn't tolerate leg cocking. The only two male dogs that come up always stay on the lead and aren't allowed in the hay barn.

Obviously they musn't get in the way, and they must be well bahaved but my YO apreciates that it is very healthy for the horses to be at ease with dogs, which is why dogs are allowed to come up.

Can't say I'm a fan especially when they wee on the hay which I think is very inconsiderate. Don't like it when I find a dog having a quiet poo in my horses bed.

Other than that if well trained and good mannered can't see why you can't bring dogs to a yard.

I think YOs have a right to allow or not, and if allowed, ask if a dog is trained and stipulate to the owners that it must be cleaned up after.

The last livery yard I was at continually (and still do) let dogs run around out of control.

The YO's dog caused and accident with my horse...and came off worse.

The YO stated that he was going to sue me for veterinary costs!

I made some enquiries and here's the legal position:

Any YO or person acting on their behalf has a duty of care for every person and animal on that yard. If they are aware of a problem and still let it continue, then they are considered to be acting with gross negligence. If an accident occurs as a result, the the YO is liable for all costs and if a person sustains a life changing injury those costs could run into £000,000's. In the absence of any livery yard insurance, YO may have to sell property to pay the costs. Oh - and as a secondary point to think about - it doesn't matter who owns the dog, the YO is still totally liable.

Common sense should prevail here. If dogs are a nuisance keep them under control or leave them at home, after all, isn't that better than allowing an accident to occur in the first place??

Pretty much free range on our yard! YO has 3 lovely dogs who are all well behaved. And a few of us liveries have dogs. All are well behaved, none run off and chase horses, and all owners are responsible and pick up after their dogs.

Personally, I keep mine on the lead when we're on the yard (sometimes she comes off if it's only her and the YO's dogs there and there's no horses on the yard) or if there are horses being led near the fields, but I do let her off once we're past the school. She's very good, she sticks to the tracks and doesn't race off under the fence, she doesn't go in the pond, and the only fence she comes under is the one to my field. She loves helping poo pick and stays within 20m or so of wherever I am. Once we're back near the yard, I pop her back on the lead again. I always carry a treat bag with a pocket size squeaky in it. She never ignores the squeaky, so it's my back up plan in case she's gone temporarily deaf/forgotten her name when I call her!
