My first thought was to delete the email. I'm not a fan of Graeme Hall. I've watched a few episodes of his show, and in my opinion, he seems to make things up as he goes along, relying on outdated training methods.
However, I was puzzled. Was the β€œcravat” unwell, and they needed a stand-in? I'm a nobody – why on earth would they want to film me training a dog when there are so many high-profile trainers out there? Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to give the researcher a call.
I'm still in shock as I write this. The researcher explained that they wanted to invite me to Lytham with my Border Collie to "demonstrate" to Graeme Hall how I would train my dog not to respond to a phone ringtone.
Graeme would then take my training method and use it to teach the Border Collie of the family seeking help – all while filming it for his TV show!
WTF
😳
😳
😳

I decided to dig a bit deeper and reached out to the force-free dog training community to see if anyone else had experienced something this bizarre.
It turns out that many trainers had also been asked to attend filming sessions to show Graeme how to train dogs before the cameras rolled. Most reported that they refused because of his methods, but a few had shown him and his team how to train a dog, only to be dismissed without any credit for their expertise.
I then did some open-source research on "The Country’s Best Dog Trainer," as the *Daily Telegraph* calls him. He has no formal training in canine behaviour or training. He’s essentially winging it with the help of whatever trainers are willing to show up and assist him.
According to his website, he charges Β£875 per session
πŸ€”
😧

Now I’m not someone who normally criticises other trainers. I prefer to let my clients decide if I’m the right trainer for them based on how I work with their dogs.
However, I couldn’t let this pass without making it public knowledge.
If you're looking for a dog trainer, please avoid this programme and this man. You have no idea whose techniques he’ll be using week to week, and given that most qualified and accredited trainers want nothing to do with him, the quality of training you’ll receive is questionable at best.
Instead, do your own research and find a local trainer who aligns with your own dog training ethics. Organisations such as The IMDT or APDT - Association of Pet Dog Trainers can help guide you to qualified & accredited trainers in your area.

Glad you posted this SD as I was about to but wasn’t sure if I would get banned . Never liked him anyway and some of the advice given was wrong IMO so I stopped watching. I would think what they are doing is fraud both him and the tv station . Hope it gets put in the papers so everyone can see

Wasn't Victoria Stilwell was an actress with no dog training experience when she was selected to host It's Me Or The Dog? And eventually attained sainthood. Appreciate she has done some courses since.
On the odd one I watched she was swanning around like an actress and wearing rather dubious outfits , reminded me of pictures I’ve seen of dodgy sexual practices..

It's actually nothing new in TV or dog training. Ask your local social media star dog trainer what they have done with their own dogs. Outside of their own premises. Proof of their training. Not what courses they have done.
They all say 'xyz years' experience (in what?) and that they grew up with dogs. Almost as if they have all done similar pyramid scheme-style corporate training.
And their websites all look the same

Oh yeah, they definitely leaned into the sexy dominatrix theme back in the day. Not sure whether that is better or worse than a cravat.

I've only watched it a couple of times but believe that The Dog Academy trainers are trainers. Kamal Fernandez, Jo Pay, Nanci Creedon, and others.

I'll admit I'm only familiar with Kamal, his achievements are available for all to see πŸ˜ƒ which I think is good. A lot of people stop competing because having a bad day at the office is not Good for Business.
I admire people who continue going out there and potentially not doing amazing, because that's life/training and they are willing to prove their ability.

Well I grew up with dogs but don’t think I could train others. The dogs I had as a child and up until I was about 20 were all very obedient and I thought I was pretty good at training dogs until I got my first lurcher !!! What a shock to my confidence that was.. I now have 2 terriers and a lurcher and one terrier is what I would call a free spirit. He is very confident with people and other dogs and really doesn’t see why I expect him to come back to me immediately. He is now 7 and seems to be going through a teenage stage and is spending more time on the lead than the other 2 because he seems to be testing the boundaries rather too much. It doesn’t help that everyone loves him and makes a fuss of him even while I’m whistling and calling him back πŸ™

I think I'm probably sticking my neck out too far here but I think there are a lot of people who just need guidance on how to train their puppy/dog to be a well mannered family member, go to their bed and settle when asked and come when called. For that I think trainers need people skills, to be able to train people (without them realising they are being trained) as well being able to train dogs.

Once they've got the basics if they want to particate in dogs sports, then they can then go on to find a club/ trainer who specialises in their chosen sport.

I think the most important point is that it’s a tv show and so needs to be entertaining and have a quick fix to whatever the problem is, it’s not a lesson in how to fix your dog.
Agree, but it gives the wrong message to the general public that training dogs is quick and easy and it certainly isn’t !! If they explained that the training took a certain number of days or weeks that wouldn’t affect the tv program and might give a more realistic view …

But does it? Or does it show and give hope to people that have issues (and not a lot of sense/ experience) with their dogs, that problems can be resolved. Thereby encouraging people to seek out help, rather than rehoming their dog instead and adding to the already huge number of dogs in rescue.

Just being devils advocate, because I really can’t stand the guy, dislike the majority of methods used, and spend most of the time watching it whilst picking holes in everything and shouting at the TV, so much so that my husband has banned it from being watched.

But I can see where they are coming from as an entertainment TV production.

Yeah but most good DOG trainers aren't good with people IME.

My trainer got a teaching degree because they knew this.

I guess this is a sore point when I (voluntarily/for free/paying my own membership) am being asked to train someone who has accreditation and qualifications, charges clients for training/has a 'canine' business, and can't make their own dog sit or walk on a loose leash, doesn't understand the difference between operant and classical conditioning and throws a tantrum when I tell them I can't teach them focused heeling yet until they have the basics solid, and they need to do a bit of work at home.

Everything is an excuse.

Almost as if they are coming to a club to get training ideas they can monetise.

They wouldn't be the first.

I've only ever watched one programme. He thought it was a good idea to stare down a Great Dane who was on sofa. I thought it was a good way for him to get his face taken off, and not something that somebody should try at home.

This guy was scheduled to do a talk locally and myself and a few others started a petition for it not to take place.
Not sure if it did in the end but I do know we got 169 signatures versus someone's spiteful petition asking for it to take place got 5.
So I guess there's hope that the TV sensationalists don't have the majority behind them. If that helps any

Oh me too, I thought I was the bee knees with my dog owning history over 6+ decades. Until little Jessie the unwanted lab, the hyper active, prey drive off the Richter scale , failed gun dog moved in. The humiliation and the huge learning curve laced with plenty of humility got us there eventually.πŸ˜‚

I’ve watched a few episodes of his programme, and every time, I’ve said to OH, why are they (owners) letting the dog do that? I am far from an expert, and CC on here helped me immensely when we got Bo. He had issues, but she pointed out, I was as a much of the problem as he was.

When we adopted Odin, we went through several pairs of oven gloves. We soon learnt not to leave them where he could reach them.

If the dog is jumping at the table and eating your food off the plate, it’s not rocket science to shut the dog away when eating is it?

In a world where truth is often silenced by those with deeper pockets, I remain steadfast.
My words are not borne of fiction or malice but are grounded in evidence, which I still possess.
Unlike certain individuals with the means to wage legal battles, my resources may not match theirs, but my integrity is untouched.
So, to the gentleman in question, Mr. Hall, should you believe my account is false, the courtroom awaits.
I’ll be here, patiently watching.
