Hi guys ,
I need some advice. My dog went to the vets and was given a general anaesthetic for an X-ray on Tuesday. He came home Tuesday evening he was a tired and crying . The vet said he wasn’t in pain he had already had his anti-inflammatory. I have been at work all day I got back to be told by mum that he’s been acting odd , crying , whining and every time he hears the neighbours dog barks he’s howling . He’s not himself at all jumping when anything makes a nose and seems withdrawn . He’s again had his anti inflammatory’s he’s eating , drinking and going to the loo fine . But mentally he’s not right . Does any know if he could still be feeling the effects . I will be ringing the vets in the morning but i am wondering if he will be okay over night ? Thanks

I wouldn't leave him overnight, stay with him and monitor. He might have a sore throat but if he is taking anti-inflammatories, I wouldn't expect him to feel too bad. He surely won't have been out of it for long for an x-ray. If you are very concerned you could ring the vet for advice tonight.

I've had quite a few dogs be very unsettled and not very "with it" after an anaesthetic. They often haven't wanted to lie down, and have paced and whined. They have eventually crashed out, and are pretty much back to normal the next day. It does seem strange that your boy still isn't right. You're doing the right thing in contacting the vet tomorrow, it must be very worrying. I hope that he's soon back to normal.

Most animals can be disorientated for about 24-48 hours post anaesthesia. Sometimes longer in older animals. My older dog took a good week until he was back to normal. I would not worry too much if your dog is eating/drinking/toileting etc. But if you are worried it might be worth calling your vets, as they would know what drugs they used, your dog etc.

One of mine had lipomas removed under a GA this week and was whiny post op. After his other GA, years back, he thrashed, screamed, it wasn’t pretty. I think it’s normal for them to be a bit unsettled, they’ve woken up in a strange place and probably got a little freaked. Mine is fine now, but if you’re worried, ring the vet.
