We want to give a rescue a home, with so many how do you choose which one?! Have confused myself by looking at too many

We rescued a dog in September 2012. The first thing was do we really have the time to give a dog the retraining he needs, the exercise he needs and most importantly the company he needs. As there's no point in doing a good deed and bringing home a dog if you're at work 9-5 everyday.
But if you can say yes to all of those then look at the breed of dog and their specific needs, I hear of too many people rehoming working dogs or huskies and not understanding the sheer amount of exercise they need a day, not just one hour walk but in some cases 3-4 hours. Or where some people believe rescuing a smaller dog is easier bcos it needs less exercise but couldn't be anymore wrong lol!
Most rescue homes want to rehome a dog that is suitable for you and the home you can give it.
For example we chose a beagle as we had previous experience of this breed of dog and understand how they have to be trained and handled, there is only one day a week where he is on his own at home for a maximum of 4 hours and he has 4 hours of work a day split into 2 hour walks and doing obedience classes once a week and during the day he'll spend his time up the yard being the yard guard dog to which he is very happy.

Look at your life style. How much time you can put in, how much experiance you have and what you want and choose from there. Its no use taking home a great dane if you live in a flat. If you don't like bathing a dog don't get a jack russell, mine rolls in fox poo nearly EVERY walk. Think with your head not your heart. Luck.

Keep looking. You'll know him/her when you see the one that's right for you.
Please don't overlook the staffies, rotties, mastiffs etc. There are so many in rescue, and they make wonderful dogs for good owners.
I took a mastiffxrottie from a dogsblog listing 3 years ago. She's the dog of a lifetime, and the gentlest creature I ever met.

It's funny you should say that! I hadn't considered a staffie but have seen one who looks so sweet and shes a bit older......we want something quiet, so we may go and see her. There are so many i wish i could give them all a home!
