Spaniel came to me with a lot of missing teeth and had to have 13 taken out when I got her due to their terrible state, build up of plaque. Looked like they had a coat of cement over them. The two or three she has still look awful. Ive actually had to scrape a layer which wasnt totally "set" off her incisor today, as this has built up in only a few days. She has biscuits and what dental chews she can cope with, I also try and brush them, but she resists and I really need two pairs of hands. Ive never had a dog that has such terrible plaque before, never even had a dogs teeth cleaned. I fear she may lose the rest of them. She has stomadine and plaque off but to no effect, dont know what else to do.

Cant get an appointment with vet for another week!

Some dogs do seem to be more predisposed to dental disease than others so don’t beat yourself up. Sometimes we think they just have more bacteria friendly mouths and therefore it builds up quicker. In her case removing the other teeth (rightly) has perhaps lead to more food getting stuck onto the remaining ones from her adapted way of eating.

Do you use dog toothpaste? Mine love it and tolerate the chicken paste being smeared in their mouth. The less tolerant one I put between my legs and use one hand on his muzzle and one on brush. He is good just walks backwards if not in your legs. However she may be resisting because they hurt. Don’t underestimate, they feel dental pain like we do.

Dental food is good for prevention but not cure. It also can be fattening.

The kindest thing, if they are completely rotten and the vet advises, may be to remove them and adjust her food accordingly.

I used to get Liquid Oral Care from Pets at Home for a very old dog. The vet said he needed a proper clean but was too old so I started using this stuff you put in their water because I needed to try and help him. His teeth still looked pretty evil but he didn't get sore gums again. He was 16 when I started him on it and didn't quite make 21. Apparently Pets at Home sell a lot of it.

I have greyhounds which are a breed notorious for bad teeth. My current one has 5 teeth left and I suspect that some of them are due for removal. The vet told me that it was just a genetic lottery that he lost.

I have an emmipet and I also use orozyme gel. A lot of dog groomers offer teeth cleaning using an emmipet.
The gel you just squirt on their gums and teeth, so no pain from brushing if they have sore gums. I’d recommend it.

I might look into that. I think she will need to have the solid stuff done by the vet. She may even loose her last teeth as I was warned this could happen.

It's a genetic thing and the same considerations apply to humans also. I suffer from quick build of pf plaque and it need s lot of effort to avoid periodontal disease. Reddish gums are a big give-a-way, like this

The enzyme toothpaste is good, it seems to help soften the plaque, and because of the action it doesn't matter if you can't get a brush on it, it's helped clean up manky teeth on our dog.

I find the weekly feeding of raw turkey necks keeps my dogs teeth clean. With just a few teeth that might not work. Try the other recommended cleaners to see if that helps.

what about something like the herbal plaque off supplments? I use them with my two - Mrs Spaniel gets bad build up but it does help keep it under control and removes it. i just sprinkle a tiny bit on their meals once a day.

You can buy the Emmipet for humans (and also the Cleany teeth I believe). I don’t know of the orozyme gel for humans. My dog seems to like the taste of it but I don’t like the smell ?

Shes booked i n tomorrow for a clean and I suspect will lose what teeth she has left,One lower canine has been leaning outwards for some time and although it doesnt seem loose the vet says it probably has cracked at the root. The back molars she has left were on the danger list due to gaps between gum and tooth, so I suspect she may have bone loss. I feel awful that she may lose the rest, she does cope well with the few she has but I feel she may be totally gummy
