Dogs eating chocolate - urgent advice pls

This is for a friend and both her dogs have had their stomachs pumped and are under vet supervision but as you can imagine she is incredibly worried.

She has 2 pug crosses, both around 2. They ate some chocolate (some - she thinks around 400grm between them), the longest time elapsed was max of 30 minutes and she had them both at the vets within the hour. So her dogs weigh around 10kg each, one of them was ill in the summer so she is also worried he has a weaker immune system. Both dogs are still at the vet and she is on her way now to pick them up to move them to 24 hour care. Both have also been given charcoal and are very thirsty. Prognosis? more questions she can ask?

Dogs had had to work quite hard to get to the chocolate as well..
 
OMG poor dogs I hope they both make a full recovery. Sorry I can't give any advise but Im sure Cayla and the other girls can give advise.

What type of chocolate was it? The stronger the chocolate (the higher the percentage of cocoa solids and the higher the amount of theobromine) the more adverse the effect will be. :( In other words, 70% cocoa solids, not good; milk chocolate or white, much better outlook. However, what may be fatal for one dog may have no effect on another of similar weight.

It's good that your friend acted so promptly; however, they are small wee dots of dogs!

Having been through this recently myself yes I'm probably the person to ask! Long term effects...there are none as long as liver and kidneys test clear once all the toxins have gone from the body. Was it milk or dark chocolate? They will be very thirsty its a side effect of the meds that make them sickk and its also a natural response to trying to flush their own system of the toxins. One of my dogs started fitting 1/2 an hour after I left him in ITC, he was kept under heavy sedation for 4 days before he had flushed enough toxin out to be awake without having a seizure, he's a very lucky boy to be sat on my sofa right now! However he had eaten dark choc of 85% cocoa solids and is a small dog (prob similar weight to the pugs). Dark choc is far more toxic and he had about 4x the toxic dose.

"luckily" it seems that the dogs ate lower quality chocolate. Problem is there is no way of knowing how much each dog ate, hence being on drips and being fed charcoal as we speak.

and the official "toxic" level of poison is 9grams per kilo of dog.. not a lot really, so a 10kg dog would be poisoned by something the size of a star bar...
 
I hope she has them home soon. I know how worrying it is. Intrestingly my dogs were not given charcoal...no idea why :confused:
 
Haha we had a good vigil going for those four days eh! You guys were all fab! :D Little chap is doing great now and nearly back up to weight. :) I can't believe now how poorly he was, it all seems like a bad dream!
