How do you stop it? My 4 yo dachshund is a pain in the neck. He's been hospitalised twice with nasty gastric problems, and being a hound its almost impossible to stop him sniffing out something disgusting. The latest thing is wolfing down horse food, straight out the buckets or any that's been spilt. Then invariably he's sick as soon as we get back into the house.

I'm think I will have to tie him up at feed time, or muzzle him when we're in the field. Does anyone else's dog have this problem, and how do you deal with it? I like the fact he can roam and exercise while I'm on the yard and I don't want to have to restrict him but it's getting beyond a joke - even if he doesn't access their feed, he'll find something grim in the muckheap or whatever and wolf it down with dire consequences.... I wouldn't mind but he'll barely touch dog food!

If you can't watch him all the time, invest in a dog run or pop him in an empty stable.
You can also attach him to you with a training lead or similar (clip at each end) in the field.
If you do catch him in the act, call him, reinforce with lead correction and give him an alternative when he comes back to you - this is why it is important to teach the 'leave' or 'drop' command when they are puppies, much less expensive and dangerous!
My fella now sees sheep poo and comes ambling over for a treat :p
