CT's thread reminded me of a couple of weeks ago when I amused myself by looking through dogs for sale ads.

TBH couldn't be bothered to post at the time but clearly have too much time on my hands today, luckily ads still available to view though the pups have been sold.

Why?

Wanted for stud a black labrador crossbreed for my border collie blue merl cross https://www.freeads.co.uk/uk/buy-sell/pets/dogs/cross-breeds/35978484/wanted-for-stud-black-labrador-cross-breed/view

https://www.freeads.co.uk/uk/buy-sell/pets/dogs/cross-breeds/35952858/springer-x-german-shepherds/view

Rare breed.

Is it Malumious? https://www.freeads.co.uk/uk/buy-sell/pets/dogs/search?for=malumious&within_miles=201&urlname=&stw=1&sortby=&sortdir=

or perhaps Malawas? (in description) https://www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/119319717/belgian-shepards.html?link=%2Fsearch%3Fkeyword%3Dmalawas

or even Malinous? https://www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/119512452/belgian-shepherd-malinous.html?link=%2Fsearch%3Fkeyword%3Dmalinous

Spot the deliberate mistake.

German Shepard

My local listings are awash with French bulldogs:

"We have a litter of full lilca and tan. Excellent blood lines and Quality, flat faces no tails."

Another, "14 Week old male and female KC registered French Bulldog puppies. You'll have to have the debate with someone else about their colour, chocolate eyes.im no expert on genetics sorry, this was the exs dog who was the expert. A brief description of each as follows:- female1. the runt, tube feed for 3 weeks and small. i made the vet aware of this and he has given her a full bill of health, just really small (unique?)."

The ones I find really sad are the "comes with bed, bowl and lead" as if they're the only attributes the poor sods have.

When I lost my GSD earlier this year and couldn't find a rescue GSD that didn't have problems, I resorted to looking at private ads.

OMG

Lovely temperament, comes with 2 muzzles and crate:eek:
and another.
Landlord says he's got to go, eating walls and patio (?)o_O

In the end I just went for a stray (not GSD) with a lovely temperament from a rescue.

Jeez , that's a worm filled belly - poor pup ! You're braver than me, I try and avoid the pets for sale listings .

are puppies normally rehomed at 12 weeks or so, there seem to be a lot of 8 week old in new homes locally. Christmas purchases probably, which I thought was on the wane now.

It is illegal to sell puppies under the age of 8 weeks.

When I was browsing there were many who were going to be ready to leave for new homes at Christmas and advertised as such. Breeders more interested in profits than the well being of the pup. IMO not an ideal time to be settling a puppy into a new environment, away from everything familiar and in at the deep end, poor things :(

Must be so difficult for young pups who've just left their mother and littermates to deal with the fireworks around new years as well, and in some households maybe they get used to loads of people being around during the holiday period then suddenly everyone is gone for the day

I've just had a look at dog adverts. OMG how expensive????? Don't get me going on unsuitable homes etc. Family member is having a cockerpoo pup. They both work full time and kids at school. They have told me that they have made sure that for the first 6 weeks someone will be at home with said puppy. Poor little soul, what about the next 14 years??? Oh don't get me started!! Furious with them, so wrong to have one and leave it for 10 hours a day!! Before anyone asks, yes I have told them off resoundingly but they will go ahead anyway/

I like malinwas more than mallinous!
I have no idea where all these strange looking American bulldogs are sprouting from. Not the white with brindle patch 45kg dogs we knew 10 years ago the blue 45kg short stout things with cropped ears.
We bought my mum a dog yesterday so can’t really judge :o

I’ve been browsing the JRTs for sale ads on Preloved and Gumtree, as you do. We recently got a cracker of a 3 yo JRT on Preloved, who genuinely needed a new home. But what is with all the JRT cross ‘another breed’ ads? Lots of JRT x chihuahua pups for sale, plus various doodles and others? Best one was a beagle cross mastiff cross JRT o_O. Just why?

Well this is fun :D newish paper, I did know merle's vary due to insert length.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6147463/

A detailed description thereof is given in detail in Fig 3. All 7 Merle alleles, in theory, can make 28 individual allelic combinations (m/m, m/Mc, Mc/Mc, Mc/Mc+, m/Mc+, Mc+/Mc+, m/Ma, Mc/Ma, Mc+/Ma, Ma/Ma, m/Ma+, Mc/Ma+, Mc+/Ma+, Ma/Ma+, Ma+/Ma+, m/M, Mc/M, Mc+/M, Ma/M, Ma+/M, M/M, m/Mh, Mc/Mh, Mc+/Mh, Ma/Mh, Ma+/Mh, M/Mh, Mh/Mh).

The Ma =
No Merle pattern–diluted–brownish hue
Ma+ Muted, undefined, diluted–brownish hue

- considering the phenotype of the sire and ignoring where that came from :p.

But, then the pups would only inherit that version rather than be very obvious merles.

I think theoretically it would not show on a yellow bitch, it would be interesting to see what any yellow pups looked like... again ignoring where it came from prior.

My dog's bestie is a choc lab that my friend found on Pets4Homes, he is a lovely dog (other than he doesn't like cats!).

I think you have to learn the equivalent of "estate agent speak" to interpret adverts both on rescue sites and private ads. I wanted a dog friendly or dog neutral dog that could live with my cat. Any that said good with other dogs after careful introduction were immediately excluded. It was very much a case of reading between the lines to weed out those with behavioural problems.

I am not a dog snob, I have been lucky to have adopted some fantastic mutts and cross breeds over the years but I too was astounded at the amount of ridiculous crosses with equally ridiculous price tags.

ETA. I think you made an excellent choice with your new dog, she looks to be a lot of fun.

I hope you are going to explain this in simple terms for those of us who are intellectually challenged :)

I had a look at adverts the other day off the back of your thread about the bizarre cross and I completely despair!! Such pointless crosses, cross of high energy dogs or both dogs prone to skin issues, or seriously protective breeds. I saw a Cane Corso crossed with a Great Dane - which to me screams not suitable for a 'normal' non-working home, and big enough to do some serious damage when/if it is mismanaged.

I stopped looking after that.
