Went to see some dogs at a kennel today, they are all rescued ones.

I fell for a dog who put his paw through the gap to shake hands and I kept going back to him.

He is GSD X about 1-18months I think, and bouncy

Had him out and he seems to be really nice, friendly and I like him.

Just dithering now and waiting for OM to come home to discuss.

But, just wondered what the general consensus is about rehoming a dog with no history and from a kennel that doesn't get them seen to when they arrive by a vet (it states very clearly to get them vet checked within 48 hours)
Kennel cough and the like.

Not sure what to do, my heart is saying have him, head is being a bit firmer, but heart is in front.....

We have a great little Battersea dog. She has no known history, well apart from abuse and neglect!

Battersea have a policy where they pick up the bill for 3 months for kennel related problems (kennel cough etc) you do have to take them back to the Battersea vet though so not actually practical at all.

If you feel it's the right dog then go for it, kennel cough isn't generally a serious illness and is often left untreated to run it's course anyway.

It's a well known kennel around here, they take in dogs found by the council and people, (my old Molly, when she escaped ended up there). They also are a boarding kennels.

Yes AM, he looked very healthy, I had a good dig in his coat, his mouth and ears etc. The others, a collie x (lovely, gentle thing) and a few JRT's but mostly Staffy x looked ok.

It was horrible though, it chokes me up going to places like this and I wanted to bring a few of them home. Makes me very sad

I wish I could have brought him back there and then but did not have the money on me and I do have to discuss with OM.

They are not a charity, it is well run and the dogs are cared for.

They don't have any history other than 'he was picked up wandering about Northampton but is friendly and fun'

Waiting for OM to get home, as have text him to say I want this dog! Fingers X'ed he says yes (Last time I got a dog, I just came home with her! lol, didn't think it was fair to do it again..)

He sounds lovely JJ

If you get him vet checked just make sure the vet checks his hips as well as heart and all the other stuff.

Let us know if OM says yes - then we want lots of piccys

ETA: how long have the kennels had him? I guess he has been checked for a chip?

He has been there 11 days approx. The fee includes chip, so presume has already been checked.

If I get him, I will get him to the vets and checked for all over including the hip check.

Tapping my fingers until 4.30 comes along.....

sounds like a slightly dodgy rescue?

Not really the dogs fault though, I would have brought him home tbh, some things are just meant to be.

You can get some fab dogs from kennels.
It sounds like a pound based kennel u have been to, so he was either found and handed in, or picked up by the dog warden and not claimed, it's very common for them to harbour kennel cough when leaving pounds, the worst case scenario will be to avoid other dogs and poss a course of anti b's, but as suggested you should be covered for vet fees for a limited time, they won't offer this information voluntarily, so be sure to ask.
Also may be worth speaking to the vet re booking him in for vaxes, as they may want you to wait for a week or so, incase he is harbouring a virus, as not to tax is immune system when coming from this type of environment.
I must say I have taken on a few pound dogs recently to work on their behaviour and all have been fit and healthy, but we do get alot of calls through work, re the "I just get a dog from kennel and it's coughing" or has sickness and the squits

A few pointers if u get him, introduce a routine at home asap to settle him, as it's not uncommon for kennel dogs to have a hard time settling in from one environment to the next and feed a bland food for a few days, (chicken and rice), then introduce a good quality food, as she will be getting uttter crap at present

Thanks, yes it is a pound, I so couldn't think of the word!!!!
If I had had the money there and then he would be home now, but maybe OM will be ok (I am sure he will, I mean, he bought me Herbie because I fell in love!) then as long as doggy is there tomorrow......

They wont reserve, it's a first come first served basis...and they shut at 4.. So I wont know until tomorrow

I have already named him.... how bad is that?

First thing I would say is vets can't just do a hip check, they have to sedate and x ray to check for hd, ( just come in from having my pups hips x rayed).best they can do otherwise is manipulate the leg to see if there is pain. However, as long as he is sound I wouldn't worry too much, you are obviously not going to be breeding from him. My only real concern would be how he is with children, I would definite see how he relates to them before you take him home. He sounds a sweetie though, fingers crossed it all goes well.

well, phoned just now, they are closed and he still there, so will there as soon as the door is open....fingers crossed!

OM said, 'you want him then?' I said, well, only if you don't mind.. he said 'not up to me is it? lol. Bless him.
