What are peoples thoughts on dogs that are left home alone with a visit twice a day, whilst owner goes on holiday???

Well its no different from them being in kennels surely but being in a place they know? I have just been house/dog sitting for my dad while hes on holiday, that seemed to work out well

So you stayed with the dog overnight??

Would never do that to my cat let alone my dogs. In saying that though they are used to me being around most of the time.
I did meet some Americans on holiday once who had left their cat home alone for a whole week while they were away. They said they had left enough food and water to last it. I was horrified!!

Yep, she almost persuaded me to share my bed but she kept farting so she went back downstairs!!

I couldn't do that

Beastie is like her mummy, and hates being on her own at night.

When my friend goes away I house sit and look after her two dogs and cat, likewise with my uncle when he goes away I move in to look after the two labs (which are also mine as well)

So dog was not home alone, whilst the owner was on holiday (apart from when you went ot work obviously).

A long weekend away... possible. Not ideal but I could live with myself (just)

Any longer would be a no.

When we go on holiday the dogs are shipped off to the grandparents so while they may not see anyone apart from at meal times, they are all together and can roam my grandparents land.

So how does everyone feel about the fact that my neighbour went on holiday on Saturday, is due back next Saturday - but the dog is home, with no one staying with it? It's being fed.

Depends on type of dog, age of dog, personality of dog, how long the owner's holiday lasted.

If it was an young/adult, active, dog, for more than two or three days, then wouldn't agree.

Well I certainly wouldn't do it to mine, which is why I struggle to get a holiday, I have to have someone living in with the gang and a lot of the pet sitting services only visit several times a day. I'm actually escaping to London for one night this weekend, but only because daughter is at home those days, and I am already worrying about it. I do know of people who have left dogs with someone just calling in to feed, walk etc but I don't think its ideal. Not sure what the situation is "legally" I don't suppose the RSPCA would see a problem with it.

Bingo! Reported it to the RSPCA yesterday - they came this afternoon. Alternative arrangements are to be made or the dog gets removed.

I stand corrected then, glad the RSPCA have acted. Was the poor dog not even being walked

Don't know. I just knew that the owners had gone away. I was away until Sunday - saw the dog in the house, but it was obvious no one was staying with it, so called the RSPCA.

Will wait with baited breath for the sh*t to hit the fan when they return from holiday. Although parents have been around tonight to collect the dog.....

I haven't read other posts but imo that is not adequate care. All manor of things could go wrong and it'd be too late to help.

My dog would have full time care in a Kennel if I was ever desperate enough to leave him.

Amy May - you did absolutely the right thing. That's an appalling way to treat a dog. Sorry if others disagree but it's something that I feel very strongly about. If I can't make arrangements for my dog to stay with someone I trust or to have someone stay here with her, I don't go away. My responsibility, my bad luck!!

I agree. well done AmyMay. I worry if I have to leave my dogs for a day. I always get someone to go and be with them during the day.
As camilla says, my dogs my responsibility, my bad luck if I can't go on holiday.
I take mine with me when I go away.

I must admit, I'm feeling a tad nervous about the repocusions.......

I thought reports to the RSPCA were anonymous? Or are you worried they will figure out it's you?

Anyway, you did the right thing in reporting them, some people are just clueless when it comes to animal care.

I think I am right in saying that you will be anonymous, in that the RSPCA won't reveal who contacted them.
Anyway you have nothing to be scared of--you did the right thing.

Oh yes, it'll be anon - but it probably wouldn't be difficult to figure out who reported it.

Well done though. I can't even bring myself to leave mine for a day if I have to go to work - he goes to a dog sitter for the full time or gets spoilt down at the yard. Agree that if you have a dog you have to take responsibility - both time and cost-wise. Yes kennels/sitter can be pricey, but I always factor that in to the cost of the hol. Not that I've had many since I got him... I tend now to only go places that he can come with!

Likewise ElaP - love me, love my dog I'm afraid!! I do realise that there are occasions when dogs cannot accompany you somewhere, but it really isn't difficult to make arrangements for alternative care.

This case makes me more and more angry and upset the longer I think about it!
