This has just been posted by someone in a fb group I am in. Something to be aware of.

SUSPECTED CANNABIS INGESTION IN YOUR DOGS:
It was mentioned that it might be helpful to share this as a main post in case anyone else’s dog eats druggie poo in the bushes on their walk or displays odd behaviour a few hours after their walk. Tala is a horror for eating fox and other poo and other than being revolting has never had this before but I have heard of two dogs that died from eating druggies poo and others very ill (we live in London. It could apply anywhere these days). I can usually call her back before she dives off into dodgy areas but this wasn’t our usual common and she dived off just at the end of our walk on Sunday. Where the big one goes, the little one follows! Occasionally the other way round. I couldn’t actually see anything when I went into the bushes to get them both so presumed they had finished it whatever it was. Even though Tala was still snuffling in the leaves. Oddly they didn’t smell of poo. They went for lie down when we got back and I presumed tired after walk as usual. A couple of hours later they were both sick - vile smelling yellow puréed consistency. Tala ate most of hers up before I could get to it
🤮
but I managed to stop Tess eating hers. Tess was looking a bit weird (walking strangely and wobbly) just before being sick so I thought it was due to being sick as she seemed to pick up. I fed them an hour later and they gobbled their food so I thought that was a good sign but watching them after that they were not right. Standing rocking back and forth or sitting staring into space with heads dropping then picking themselves up and swaying. Not really interested in anything but staring into space. If you got their attention they would focus on you and be alert but then go back to this weird state. Knowing what I do about other dogs we decided not to take a risk and to take them to the 24hr vets down the road from us. They confirmed this was typical of cannabis effects in dogs and that dogs brains absorb it more as are more sensitive to its affects than humans and they often get Ataxia. This was why Tala was doing strange movements like lifting her legs as if climbing over objects that weren’t there. Tess also was eating a hoof earlier and suddenly leapt back growling and barking at it, probably hallucinating. Also their heart rates were below normal. Horrible and scary. They were put on drips over night to help flush it out and given charcoal. Blood tests taken and bloods normal ranges thankfully but they were unable to test for the array of drugs used these days even though they apparently showed classic signs of Cannabis ingestion so we don’t know for certain which it was. Being in overnight also meant if their heart rates dropped too low they could be given something. They are both much better. Almost back to normal. Tala still not her full energetic self but apparently can take 48hrs. She was so sad and confused poor love. Couldn’t hold her head up without it continually dropping so I had to hold it for her until she settled enough to lie down
🥲
I hope our story helps everyone know what the signs are if it happens to them. I also hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else and wish we lived in a more civilised world
😞

A short time ago @LaurenBay ’s beagle ate human poo which contained cannabis. A stay in the vets and like your Tess and Tala poor dog survived, you can read the post. Bloody awful 😞

I knew I'd read about it happening to another dog recently, thanks for reminding me. These aren't my dogs but yes thankfully they survived due to a vigilant owner.

It comes up in the Facebook vet group quite a bit and usually goes along with are you absolutely sure they’ve had no access as it’s pretty standard presentation and it usually turns up that someone in the house has had some form of it somewhere, or they’ve visited someone else’s.

I don’t think usually recommend a vet trip though, just for them to sleep it off.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that it could happen. I mean, I did know that traces of even perfectly legal medications can sometimes be found in human poop, so I should've realised that meant that there's also a risk that traces of illegal substances could be found in human poop, and if a dog then found it...

Poor dogs that got so sick because of it.

Are that many stoned people sh1tting in the woods and does potent amounts of THC survive the human digestion process? I don't know. But it's more common to smoke pot than eat it, at any rate. Less faffy, for a start. No home baking required. Plus, you get the effects immediately, whereas eating it takes a couple hours (then hits you like a train).

Or is it more likely that these stories of "my dog must have eaten druggies' poo" are actually stories of "my dog got into my/my family member's/my mate's stash but I don't want to 'fess up to it?" You wonder.....

Thats a good reason for muzzling your dog I certainly have done that with my Dobes who will eat anything. One of the reasons was Diesel ate some human poo, they obviously had a curry the night before, boy did he have an upset stomach.

Thank you for posting this.

Mine loves poo. I did buy him a muzzle but it rubbed his face. My friend's dog has a rubber basket type muzzle but if she just squishes it down and eats anyway 😕

"'The joint I am about to roll requires a craftsman. It can utilise up to twelve skins. It is called a Camberwell carrot.'

'It is impossible to use twelve papers on one joint.'

'It's impossible to make a Camberwell carrot with anything less.'

'Who says it's a Camberwell carrot?'

'I do. I invented it in Camberwell and it looks like a carrot.'"

My dog got cannabis poisoning from eating human poo so it definitely happens. Weirdly he never ate poo of any kind but for some reason suddenly dived into the bushes on a walk .. but because he never ate poo my husband who was walking the dogs didn’t think anything of it. By the time my husband got them back to the car about 45 minutes later his eyes were glazed and he was having trouble walking in a straight line. He went straight to the vet as he was suddenly very unwell with no obvious cause. Vet said it was classic cannabis poisoning, gave him an emetic and heroically went through the copious amount of vomit to find human poo (she definitely earned her fee that day ..). He was fine by the evening and has thankfully never done it again. This happened on a footpath on the way into a national trust property in South London.

A local vets put out a warning last year after several dogs were treated for cannabis poisoning after eating something when they were out. All had been walked in the same place.

I recall a couple years back, a young Springer came into the vet that had managed to gobble down it's owners stash, it was very very poorly, touch and go.
