please tell me about doggy microchips.

my vet told me he would microchip J if and when he was castrated (J,not the vet) saying it was best to do it when the dog was under anesthetic.the vet made it sound like a major job.


now i see,at a local fete,they are doing it there.i`m confused,which is the best option?

also do the readers read all or are there different companies that do the chips?

It's the equivalent of an injection, so no need for anaesthetic. But perhaps he/she just meant get it all done in one go. No idea about scanners I'm afraid. Doubtless new technology will make it difficult.
 
It's a big needle basically. Adult dogs obviously squiggle a bit more than pups, so he is probably trying to kill two birds with one stone.
I'd get it done for free personally.

Readers read all chips, different countries and different companies have different codes. Once found three chips from three countries in one dog, imported from the Netherlands :p

i will look to see how they handle the process at the fete.

my vet is very good,in that,J has never noticed when having his injections.
 
The needle is BIG the chip is about the size of a grain of rice (bit longer).

For this reason I had my JRT chipped when he was castrated as he is small and the needle is big, so felt kinder to have done while he was knocked out.
 
My pups were done at just under 8 weeks and only one of them seemed to notice and squeaked, and that was a wimpy male! The rest were more interested in chewing vets stethoscope:). Pickle was also done at 8 weeks before we got him and must have been tiny :(
 
My pups were done at 6 and a half weeks and never noticed a thing. I left the parsons until 8 weeks as they are smaller. Done correctly its a painless and simple procedure, get it done wherever is cheapest and most convienient for you. I have had older dogs chipped with no fuss either, I dont think I've ever seen a dog being chipped taking any considerable notice at all.
 
Had my puppy done with her first vaccination on vets recommendation- she did yelp and cry a lot, made me feel so bad :( but then she is a complete wimp and will yelp if you drop a bit of dog food on her :rolleyes:
I'm glad we did get it done early though, they are much more likely to run off and get lost as puppies, and I was happier knowing she had it.
 
It's not that bad, I would rather hear a little squeak than than lose the dog and not have it chipped, I personally would not wait for neutering until a dog is chipped, it can go missing before then and thats the risk, obs we chip hundreds of dogs, some under the anaesthetic if you come in on the day they go under for neuter if not they get chipped anyway. All of mine where chipped by me and they where not under anaesthetic and I don't think I have had a sqeual yet from my own dogs, my scanner picks up all chips. You can tell which company the chip belongs to because of the code at the beginning. A scanner (the person owning one) will know how/who to contact.:)

If there is the chance that your dog is off lead in public before castration then microchipping should be done before the castration.:)
 
I chip and in all the time I have done it, only one dog has been too much for me to do (a little JR that wanted to eat me even with a muzzle on!).
I have chipped litters of 8 week old puppies (my insurance states they must be 8 weeks) and they get over in it in seconds with a cuddle and a little puppy treat.
 
My Inuit was done before we picked her up at 7 weeks. She had lots of loose skin when she was a puppy and the chip has moved to her chest next to her arm pit (or leg pit??!!) it was hard to find at the vets but is noted in the passport where it is but vet says it may move again. My friend has a little white fluffy dog and the vet said to wait till she was spayed at 6 months but her pup is a right wimp
