I know many will disagree with me, but I am watching a report on the news about a man who got hypothermia and two other men who risked their lives going into a lake to save him.

Pictures showed his spangle, which he had gone in to rescue, out already and running around while the three men were still in the water.

Dogs rarely, rarely drown, and if they do, well, that's very sad - but don't risk your life, that of others and bereave your family trying to save them, please, and so often they come out unscathed after initially panicking.

They have layers of fur and can last much longer in the freezing water than us - to be on the safe side, don't let your dogs off lead or dogs without recall run around near frozen lakes.

Totally agree, You know what Tikka is like with water, shes a strong swimmer and I know she could get herself out of trouble if the situation should ever arise, Not a hope in hell would you catch me going in after her .

Mind you I have seen me stand at the edge of the river and watch her as she dives and I'm muttering to myself ..... "right you can come up now, up now ......TIKKA !! LEAVE THE GOD DAMN BOULDER AND GET YOUR HEAD UP OUT OF THE WATER AND BREEEAAAATHEE "

Here Here. Well said. My husband had a near horrid experience once. This silly man came on a shoot with his new "gun dog", that turned out to have very few manners and even less recall, who jumped in a frozen lake. My husband had to stop the silly panicky man from jumping in behind the dog. Instead he shot holes in the ice in front of the dog in the hopes he'd come up again. Thank God he did, and no harm was done. But if my husband hadn't have been there, I doubt anyone else would have stop the man from jumping in. God knows what would have happened.

I have to keep Skye on a long line/lead near water during this freeze.
There is a report in our local paper (chronicle and Echo, Northampton) about a man who nearly died going in after his dog. It was only due to an off duty lifeguard being there that he was saved.
 
I totally agree with this now because I have Owen but would also say I have jumped in to save my ex MIL dog storm (miniature Shanzer (sp) )

Will say we where out at sea with a medium swell and the stupid mutt jumped in to get what he thought was a ball which was in fact a bough (sp) for a fishing net and he got tangled didn't think twice jumped in untangled him and then swam back to boat with him on my back (neat trick he learnt from me :D)
