Dogs on yard

Should dogs be allowed on livery yards etc

Yes, but well behaved dogs, who do as the owner tells them and they have a place to go and lay down out of the way. - Oh, and ones that don't yap at horses evey time they move!
 
Have ticked only on a lead, would rather not at all but I don't think that would be realistic as so many liveries (and the YM) have dogs.
My mare is scared of them (the only things that scare her!) as she has been bitten by the yard dogs at our old yard (yes I went ballistic!). I don't see why I should have to shoo them around from her back legs while she hyperventalites while the owner calls from miles away 'oh, they are fine with horses'. I don't care if they are fine with her, she isn't fine with them, I don't feel she should be scared when it is avoidable and I would hate her to tread on one while dancing around to avoid the bloody things!

Trouble with dogs on a lead is, wherever you tie them up, chances are they are in the way .... and quite a few still are very bad mannered and bark at horses. If you don't tie them up, then you have got to hold on to them, which is a constant pain in the behind. Better have well behaved dogs, that are quiet and do as they are told. As for kids = thats another thread altogether and iam sure has been done before? (I personally like to see kids on a yard, with a responisble adult of course!)
 
I clicked "other". Dogs should be allowed, as long as dogs and owners are well behaved - ie, don't let them crap all over the place or pee on hay, chase horses etc etc. I love taking mine to the yard - if it's very busy, she's kept on the lead. If it's quiet, I let her off but she doesn't go out of my sight. If someone else arrives, she's back on the lead. I can't stand dogs peeing in my hay, I hate dog crap all over the yard, and I don't appreciate being left to supervise other peoples dogs. So yes, well behaved, responsible owners, with equally well behaved dogs are fine. In my opinion :) Otherwise, chuck em off. Same goes for kids :D
 
I have 2 dogs, the jack russel has learnt to be aware of horses feet and is well mannered and listens to my commands and roams free, where my staffie is now banned from yard by my choice as twice she has chased my pony
 
A well-behaved dog that does as it is told, stays out of the way of people and horses, doesn't bark unneccessarily and is picked up after is no bother to anyone and should therefore be allowed.

Mine stays in the car. :o
 
Always been on livery yards that allow dogs. Never experienced a problem! All the dogs are well behaved and have been taught from a young age how to behave around horses. I think that the training of the dogs has alot to do with alot of the doggy related issues.
 
I ticked allowed to roam free, but and this is a big but, only if dog is not silly and used to being round horses, owner exercises dog before they take on yard (i.e. takes the dog elsewhere to have a crap) and they are not left roaming around when owner is not there i.e. out on a ride.

I have since my dog was a puppy (Golden Retreiver) taken her to the yard with me, i always always exercised her off the yard first and she always stayed with me, never barked at the horses and when i went out for a ride, she came with me. I don't take her down anymore as she is getting on abit now and is not so fast on her feet, plus she feels the cold more now and will no longer come out with me on a ride and i don't think its fair on her to lock her up in my stable.

Can't stand owners who dont do the above, especially those whose dogs crap in the haylage - grrrr
 
I voted never only because that is the rule at my current yard and it works very well. Over half the liveries have dogs but many don't bring them down the yard at all and those that do their dogs must stay in the car or carpark area only. They seem perfectly happy with this and a few liveries will take their dogs out riding with them or for a walk over the woods once they've finished on the yard. Everyone's happy, simple. No blurred rules or anything, everybody sticks to this. By the way I love dogs and always stroke those in the carpark but I just don't see the need for an owner to have their dog on the yard when they are actually spending the time dealing with their horses, no matter how well behaved the dog.

On my previous yard there were no rules about dogs and they could do and go where thy liked, which despite being a dog lover I found frustrating. My concern was mainly due to safety reasons around my yearling and the fact I didn't want him to have a bad experience with one of the dogs or become frightened of them or even prevent a situation where my yearling might hurt one of the dogs but unfortunately the dog owners wouldn't understand.

I think it's a safety thing primarily, be it the dogs, the horses or the people on the yards overall safety. It's much the same as yards with the no children rule.

Ditto JC - only if on a lead and if poop picked up.

Last yard I was on YM had dog and never poo picked. When complained about to YO (not by me) person was met with "What do you expect in the country". Well not stepping in dog ***** on a livery yard were my thoughts.

The subject was brought up again at a livery meeting. One livery said whats the problem if you see it and have shovel in your hand pick it up but if I wanted to poo pick dog poop I would have my own dog and if the YM cant clean up after their own dog I dont see why dogless liveries should clean up after others pooches.
 
I think as long as well behaved no problem being off lead. I take 3 of mine with me, 2 of them came from the yard owner anyway (she rehomes dogs via a rescue) and the other one was out hacking with me from 14 weeks so is as horse savvy as they come. My other 3 stay at home either because they are too old or not yard friendly! We generally don't have problems with the dogs on the yard....don't get me started on the bloody kids allowed to run riot, now those are things I'd want on leads sometimes. :mad:
 
I said yes roaming free. I have 2 labs both well behaved. The hay is fenced off so they can't pee on it and in the unlikely event that they poo I pick it up. The do not bark (unless we are about to go for a ride then they get a bit silly) and they have respect for the horses. If needed my car has a cage and they are put in there until they can come out again. Most of the time they are laying in the cage with the door open anyway!!

Lol! Love this!

Totally happy with having well behaved dogs on the yard, that are shut in the stable when owner rides withour barking etc., and owners that poop scoop if they mess anywhere. I got a rescue dog a month ago, and caught it pooping on the horse muckheap today - I was very impressed! I am on my own yard though!

That's disgusting!

I voted roam free but I'm on a small yard with lots of space and YO has a dog which runs free also. My dog can be a bit of a pain sometimes as she loves people, so if someones farrier turns up I put her on a lead (although some of them don't mind her so I can leave her off).

I think it depends on the amount of space on a yard and the amount of people/horses there are. I didn't take my dog to my last yard as it was too busy.

Yes agree with Rana, I like dogs on yards, also like them roaming free as long as they are well behaved and kept under control!!!! Ditto the kids!!!
 
I voted no, but I guess it really depends on the dog. I have 5 (4.5 too many lol) and they live at home with my horses. Most of them are no problem at all and the horses certainly don't mind them, but one barks constantly everytime the horses move which is VERY annoying. The others are ok at home, but I would never take them to a yard with me because they would just be pests and get in everyones way. 3 are very nosy and would be in stables, under people's feet, generally being annoying, 1 is old and deaf so would probably get run over by wheelbarrows, horses, cars etc :rolleyes:, and the 5th is the noisy one.

But some dogs can be fine and well-behaved, in which case, if the owners clean up after them and they are not pestering other liveries or horses, I guess it wouldn't be a problem.
 
I posted "other" because my last livery yard was a small one and we all bought our dogs, no bother. I even used the fields for training!
However, yappy dogs or that aren't used to horses or that cannot be controlled should not be allowed. Obviously if it's a busy yard I'd say keep them on leads. It really depends on the yard!
 
I think it is very healthy for horses to be completely at ease with dogs, and there is no better way to desensitize horses to dogs than by having a few well behaved ones mooching around on the yard.

However I would not tolerate coming across dog mess, or having my hay bales urinated up against!
I think that having a few dogs roaming around only works on small private yards, or on yards where perhaps it's just the owners dogs, so it does not get out of control. I can't imagine it would be a good idea for large livery yards to let all their liveries bring their dogs along?
