Havent got a problem with dogs offlead at the yard so long as they are well behaved, friendly and avoid the horses/dont get in the way. If not they should be on a lead and owners should use common sense and realize if their dog is barking constantly they shouldnt be bringing it to the yard!!

Yes so long as they remain the responsibility of the owner at all times. Including poop picking up.

Saying that on my yard my dog gets priority, and if there's a dog who intimidates her or upsets the balance it has to stay in the car.

I have to say I'm very much against leaving dogs in cars, if they are not fit to be allowed out, leave them at home.

Same here. I have a van with cages in the back and air vents but I don't ever leave the dogs in it. If they need to be secured while at the yard they go in the horses stable or they stay at home.

Ah, yes, I ought to add a caveat to my post - my dog only stays in the car because I can park on the yard and she is thus never out of my sight. Would never countenance leaving dogs in cars to go to the shops, the pub etc. and not at all between about March and September.

Because some smart person is going to ask why take the dog at all, it's because there are lots of excellent walks leaving from the yard and for the sake of her snoozing in the back for half an hour while I sort the horse out we can have a cracking couple of hours out. It's also part of her on-going education in staying calm around horses (second hand dog with ishoos ).

No.

Outside dogs are not permitted on my yard full stop. I don't want my dogs to harm them, or for other Owners or my cats, goats to be harrassed. Better all round if they stay at home or in the truck.

I've been bitten, had horses bitten, children bitten, horses/children/cats chased, dogs kicked (tough luck) and even seen a dog run over on yards.

My dogs come on the yard because it is their home. They are confined during the daytime, they do not take kindly to trespassing dogs on their turf anymore than they do coyotes, raccoons or skunks (unfortunately they come off worse every time)

When I've had the horses at home on the farm I 've always taken my dogs with me but it was only me and my neighbour there and all our dogs got on well and were fine with horses, sheep and cows.

But when I've been at livery it would never occur to me to take my dogs with me.

The last yard I was at had a strict no dogs policy and that suited me fine!

I think like most people its not the dogs I object to but the owners. It always seems to be the most badly behaved dogs who have the owners with the rose tinted specs who can't believe their little precious could possibly misbehave by chasing your horse, jumping up and snapping at his nose over his door, stealing food from his feed buckets, chewing brushes, barking and of course the lovely leg lifting up your property and poohing in your hay/straw/shavings/haylage!

But I also object to dogs at shows too. They always look so miserable being dragged through crowds and running the risk of being trodden on. At Hickstead this year there where several people with big dogs up in the stands that people had to keep stepping over. And its usually so hot for them too. If you have your dog with you how do you ever manage to go in any of the trade stands or exhibition halls?

Plus there is always the loose dog chasing the horses. Surely it is just a matter of time til there is a dog related accident?

Dogs should all be on a lead at our livery yard I totally agree with this. However I go up the yard at night (as I work during day) and take my boy and he runs around happily in the enclosed yard ONLY if there is no one else at the yard and all of the horses are in the stables, by the time I go up there everyone has been put to bed and gone home!

I do take him on his lead up to our XC course and he does run free there but then there are public footpaths dotted through so not an issue. Obviously if there were horses using the course he would be on a lead.

Of course dogs should be allowed to run around freely,

On someone else's property?
Why?
What gives them that right?
So it would be OK if I bring my German Shepherds to your property to run after your pets and mess on your lawn?

Some idiot bought a rat terrier here once, totally ignoring my one and only rule, the little **** chased my cats, and killed one, however a cornered cat fought back and clawed it, blinding it in one eye.

Your comment was a wind up, right?

I think there are some people who are so besotted with their dogs that they just don't take anyone else's feelings into consideration. Whenever they get somewhere, the car door opens and out jumps the dog regardless of whether they have permission for dog to be there or not.

When I worked at at saddlery/feed store I lost count of the number of people who thought it was ok for their dog to be running round peeing up the feed bags!

At our horse shows we have a strict dogs on lead policy but every show there is always someone who thinks that rule doesn't apply to them and when we point it out to them rarely do we get an apology, usually its a rude comment!

There is a yard near me which has such a strong anti-dog policy (lots of sheep) that they don't even like dogs on cars or lorrries!

If you are at a livery yard you have to go by yard rules and if they say no dogs then thats it, end of!!

Absolutely! Personally that would be the yard I'd avoid but that's my choice, my dogs are well behaved (they should be I'm a dog trainer) but they are also part of my life and if they are not welcome somewhere then I'll leave. No offence taken I'll spend my money elsewhere. In the same manner as I didn't allow children under 12 on my yard when we had one and I took no offence if people didn't like the rule they just didn't have their horses there.

I don't mind well behaved dogs about the place as long as they're not left unsupervised. Oh, and don't crap in my stable or p*ss on my hay

i voted other.
i see no problem with dogs on yards as long as the owner has full control & they dont race about/interfere with others there/bark.
my gal plays tag with my 2 & helps poo pick (well eats it) but she is made to stay away from anyone elses horses, prev yard i was at had a JRT that would race undre the feet as you lunged/rode & would try to jump up & bite the nose/throat got right royally stomped by SWA & YO's own H/W cob but it hasnt learnt.

I voted other. My dog does not go on a lead at the yard as she is under full control, stays where she is told and walks at heel when told, she only ever barks on command and only approaches our own horses and never runs round their legs or under them. I know those who bring theirs down on a lead and they can't behave and are still a nuisance. It depends on the dog and the abilities of the owner.

My horses enjoy socialising with my dog. I also find if they are spooky about a particular fence I take the dog over it while they watch and it fixes it so my dog does a super job!

I've got my own place and have a DIY livery, and my stated policy is that "dogs must be kept strictly under control. Sheep are nearby and the farmer has the right to shoot any dogs he sees loose and/or worrying sheep".

Also, as regards children, my livery agreement states that children under 16 must not be allowed anywhere unsupervised at any time.

My current livery does have dogs but doesn't bring them to the yard, probably as well as I gather they are rather boisterous.

The other rule I have is that doggy mishaps must be cleaned up after pronto.

I have put roam free HOWEVER only if they are well behaved, supervised by the owners, are cleaned up after, good around horses etc AND not too many dogs!!!! My dog is not good with other dogs or horses so he would stay on the lead....however due to him having to be on the lead I actually don't see the point in taking him to the yard at all...when I can give him a good run around the fields at home.

I have brought my dog to the yard a few times, but only because I am now the only one there and she is well behaved, does not chase horses and there was no other dogs about on the yard .

Although YO does run boarding kennels on another part of the yard, but Tikka is kept under control at all times .

Now she is only brought up on a rare occasion to keep me company on the dark nights, YO now has a new puppy which is kept down at her house so she will only ever be brought out when I know the pup is not on the yard .

Confused much ?

Should clarify - my dog is trained to sit in boot with boot open and not leave, and is also in my sight. She also loves sitting in my lorry and jumps in if I leave the door open and will not move, pretty much all day. I have to drag her out. I have a big cage in the tack room where she goes also, usually in the summer so she doesnt become a hot dog!

If someone comes to my yard and their dog upsets the balance, it goes in the car. My big horse is liveried at a different yard and whilst I am riding my dog sits in the lorry or my boot. If people on my yard dont like it they can take dog home and come back. I am not a dog sitter nor a kennels and if the owners dont want to train their pooch to be good they have to take responsibility. :)

voted on a lead whilst on actual yard as per rules

but i only take dog up if im not riding (she doesnt need to be hanging around waiting for me), as my horse lives out we walk down to the field give her a feed then go off for a walk through the surrounding fields so is then let off the lead if horses arent in the fields.

Dont really like it when people have them off leads especially when theres more than one dog or letting them roam around as they please getting in peoples way !

If they are on leads, yes. I like dogs and many people spend all day at the weekend etc. at the yard and have a dog. Why not be able to bring it? I have a chihuahua and she doesn't like staying up all day but she loves coming up for a bit. Lot's of my friends keep their dogs up all day and they love it.

I've answered this question as if I was opening my own yard and had to make the decision, therefore the answer is no.

I think it's easier that way, there is no grey areas then.

Dogs should be on lead yes but not everyone does this also they can slip their leads, so no barking dogs, no dogs jumping up at people with their muddy paws or knocking children down or chasing horses/chickens or getting stood on or kicked by anyones horse, it soloves a lot of potential problems.

Now I don't mind a 'yard dog' that actually belongs to the livery owner but people bringing other dogs onto the yard, no, much easier if they don't.

I have no problem with dogs on yards if they are well behaved - better for the horses to get used to them that way. What I do have a problem with is dogs who are allowed to pee and cr*p in the barn where my hay/straw is. Particularly if it is not picked up and left there for me to tread in when it is dark.

Couldnt have put it better myself, thanks Dollysox:D
I could imagine on a bigger yard loads of dogs would be too much, you might have different rules to a small yard.

I wouldnt mind them so much if they kept themselves and their poo out of my way - but when they climb all over hay/straw and pee everywhere, my foot itches to give them a firm boot up the derieire!!!

Our YO has a young collie who is pretty good although he does play on the yard a lot ...the horses soon get used to it, and TBH there are so many dogs at the shows we go to, we can't have them being scared of dogs running about.
Interestingly he has very quickly worked out that my mare doesn't like him (she's very anti dog, espescially smaller ones) and gives her a very wide berth!
One of the P-t grooms also has a dog that she brings to work with her, but he's really quiet around trhe horses.
Smaller dogs are often more of a problem on yards IME.

I clicked "other". Dogs should be allowed, as long as dogs and owners are well behaved - ie, don't let them crap all over the place or pee on hay, chase horses etc etc. I love taking mine to the yard - if it's very busy, she's kept on the lead. If it's quiet, I let her off but she doesn't go out of my sight. If someone else arrives, she's back on the lead. I can't stand dogs peeing in my hay, I hate dog crap all over the yard, and I don't appreciate being left to supervise other peoples dogs. So yes, well behaved, responsible owners, with equally well behaved dogs are fine. In my opinion :) Otherwise, chuck em off. Same goes for kids :D

I clicked other too for more or less the same reasons.... Mine stay with me and do not chase the horses or run around the paddock senselessly whilst I am riding. One dog that does runs around the paddock senselessly whilst anyone is riding stays on it's lead. One other that will not heel always stays on the lead...... The dogs are treated individually to their training which then encourages the cheekier dogs owners to train their dogs so that they too can have as much fun as ours.

I too clicked 'other'.

Some dogs are really annoying (am thinking of 1 in particular on my yard) but my dog stays on a lead. Whilst she is great with horses, she's not so good with other dogs. Unfortunately, the '1 in particular' baits my dog and her owner does nothing.

I don't like dogs ****ping everywhere and being annoying but I do think it is good for horses to get used to dogs. My dog gives my horse a bit of confidence too which is good for him.

I have had to say "never" purely because our yard is only meant to have dogs there if they are in a car or stable (and on lead between). however they are always loose, running around, barking, pooping everywhere (tiny JR poos that owner declares not to see) and peeing on my rugs and hay. Therefore as they can't stick to the rules - ban them completely!

Same rule for children (apparently children shouldnt get out of cars as the farm isn't insured) yet they run everywhere, pushing doll pushchairs around my horses - UUUrgh - therefore (and I'm particularly grumpy today) ban them too.
