As we've just done children I wondered what rules people have about dogs on yards?

I don't have a dog at the moment but I do enjoy having well behaved dogs around the yard. However we have had a couple of dogs in the past who've been a real pest.
Dog 1 was a terrier that yapped constantly and the owners shouted at it all the time to shut up. It also used to nick your gloves or anything else you put down for 2 seconds and jump in the car after it had been in the water trough.
Dogs 2&3 were a pair of labs who were nice dogs but had no discipline. They would jump up on cars and people and roll around the school when we were riding in it. The owner again used to shout a lot, but the dogs took no notice.
Thankfully they've all left and we just have well mannered dogs at the moment.
We're a little DIY yard with no-one really in charge so its difficult to complain without being seen as the person who's always moaning. I just wondered what rules other people have - are you allowed dogs and do they have to behave?

I have 2 dogs, we are allowed dogs at our yard, but I dont take mine up simply because ithik its rude having dogs running and playing aound a yard.
Besides its a bloody livery yard, not a dog creche!

There are 2 people up our yard, one with THREE dogs, who brings them to the yard eevery day, one is a 10wk old puppy, it drives me mad, espec when they just stand in front of you when trying to bring horses in or out, or run around chasing you and horse, or go and crap in your stable/in the yard etc etc.

the pup had to go for an x ray the toher week because a horse stood on his leg, FFS wy is a tiny puppy up a yard running loose, arrgh!

If I get my own plce NO DOGS wil be allowed on the yard!

I own the yard and I have two well behaved dogs. They are allowed to go where they want and do what they want - but never interfere with other horses. I do let my liveries bring their dogs but they must be kept on leads on the yard. If they are at all agressive they are not allowed on the yard. If they attack my dogs they are not allowed and if I see them going for the horses in any way they are out. The liveries can let their dogs off in the fields if no horses are around. I also insist that they clean up after their own dogs.

our YO has a dog which practically lives at the yard and her parents who live on site have two that are sometimes on the yard although one is aged now and just does her own thing and doesnt get in the way, the little one ,yorkie type dog is a bit of a live wire and has no respect for horses whatsoever. i dont take my dog up the yard as he would probably P off at the first opportunity. the worst thing is the crap thats everywhere. its not worth taking dogs especially if there is a horse on the yard that hates dog as our big lad does and our welsh will try and kick them purely to amuse herself!

YO has two pretty well behaved dogs, even the puppy is pretty good and generally YO doesn't allow liveries dogs running about.

We have chickens though, some of the liveries hate them but I think theyre great. The two cockerels have a reputation for being feisty but seem to do as theyre told for me

Apart from the entertainment value they come in the barn where my horses are and rummage through everything, flapping, squabbling s******g.......

They're like a badly behaved bunch of pensioners. They kept Will company when he was on his own and with the new ned have helped de sensitise him to sudden flapping and noise

YO has to Jack Russels, no bother at all, they spend most of their tie sleeping in the car or caravan .. as I am the only person who keeps my horses their, I don't take my two dogs up, or if i do they stay in the car.. we have sheep and two goats which the horses like

dogs aren't allowed on the yard however YO's two dogs are allowed out when there are no lessons and they're pretty good-they don't really go near the horses just run off across the fields!

Canine Puppy comes to the yard with me, and has done since the first day she was old enough to leave the house. Everyone who meets her comments on how very well behaved she is, and I wouldn't take her if she wasn't.

I have been at more than one yard where there's been out of control dogs and it really makes me furious

I had a young TB who was difficult to tie up when I got him (straight out of training) and spend a great deal of time and effort curing him of pulling back, only for the new YO to "resuce" a monsterous natured GSD cross that had spent it's life on a chain. She turned it loose in the yard to run around with all the others and it bit Billy in the face.

I could never get him to tie up quietly again. It also used to snap under the door of the school when you were trying to lunge/ride.

Dogs were allowed on all the yards I've been at, and allowed to literally do what they wanted whether it be running riot in the school, nipping in the feed room or dozing off in the stables! On one yard, dogs had to be tied or kept in your horse's box if you were working/riding as you don't have eyes on them, but my dog hates horses, she's petrified of them so she yaps constantly, so I always shut her in an empty box when I visit my old yard.

no choice where we are the YO has loads! like a zoo! all horses seem to be really chilled out with them around. one little boarder terrier used to sleep with my mare and foal allong with some chickens and ducks!

My YO's wife breeds Westies and they bark and bark and bark ALL THE TIME on the yard. It is maddening. For this reason, it is hard for my YO to object to any staff bringing their quiet, well behaved dogs up to the yard

So I get to bring my 2 whippets to work, and the other girl brings her springer. Our dogs are well trained though and usually tied up in the tack room or in the car if we are teaching/hacking out.

Generally though, although he allows his staff to bring their dogs, he prefers it if the liveries don't. If they have to for some reason, the dog must be kept on a lead. Everyone generally follows this guideline without any need for official enforcement. I have known him come onto the yard and go "for someone that doesnt like dogs, I feel like I'm running a bloody kennel at the moment!' but that is usually when some of his kids are back with their dogs and the Westies are going ballistic at the new arrival LOL

I have been on both types of yard but I don't take my dogs, simply because I know the cheeky muts all to well. They are two Labradors who want to play with EVERYTHING and if it looks reasonably edible, they will have a good chew. I could imagine the damage they would cause unleashed

So even if they do allow dogs, I choose not to take them. Plus, when I am wanting to get my chores done and home at a decent hour, I really don't want to be stopping and starting, as I would have to check up on they constantly.

Dogs are allowed in the yard, but there's not usually any apart from the farm dogs. There used to be more, and they peed on everything which was very annoying

YO has a JRT who is pretty good really, I banned my own dogs from the yard because they are too noisy and it's impossible to concentrate on the horse and keep an eye on 3 dogs. One of the other liveries brings her 2 at times and and they are a pesky nusiance, she also doesn't clean up after them. I do think it's good for the horses to be used to dogs but within reason, it's not really practical to have loads of them about.

Dogs have to be on leads at our yard.

I'll be bringing my 5 month old puppy to the yard tomorrow. I'll be going down very early when no one is about and see how he behaves. We'll be avoiding busy times until he's used to the place as it's just not fair on other liveries.

Tuppence goes to as many places as possible with me. That includes the yard. She is the only dog there, as YO doesn't have any, but there are LOTS of cats. Tuppence is sort of scared of cats, but if they want to play then GREAT!!!! I always clean up after her and as a rule she sticks with me on the yard when I'm making feeds etc and then runs down to the fields with me - she runs whether I'm driving or walking down! It's an important part of where I keep my horses, being able to take her, as I have no garden/yard/enclosed area for her where I currently live on the stud. She might be a small terrier, but she is exceptionally well behaved for her type!

No dogs allowed on mine.

I must have had a really bad lot here, but life is less stressful without canine visitors winding mine up. I know that many dogs are well behaved but I'd rather they stayed at home.

The ones that have come here have chased and cornered cats, used the haybarn as a play and poo pen, gone in my house, stolen my dog and cat food, chased the horses, run away from their owners in the woods, crapped on my lawn, oh, and snapped at my daughter............nah. They can be badly behaved in their own homes.

I have my own small yard and own three dogs who have the run of the place. They are extremely good around the horses except for Sage who likes to chase me around the school when I ride. For this reason they are shut in the house when I or nay one else ride. If anyone keeps their horse here and have dogs they are only allowed on in the car and must not run loose. Too many dogs spell trouble sooner or later imo.

dogs are allowed on the yard but we're advised to keep them on short leads whilst on the yard but they are allowed off the lead on the XC course (providing no-one is using it!!) I only take mine up with me if im not riding as i dont want to leave her in the stable unattended as (a) it s not fair for her (b) ts not worth the risk incase some1 goes to say hi & she get out accidently!

Two of the YO's dogs (lurchers) live at the yard 24/7, the other two that live at home with her (collie and chiwaha sp) come to the yard for the whole day. The only other dog allowed on the yard is the instructers dog. The older lurcher is quite territorial and so it's a problem bringing new dogs onto the yard.

We take our dog up the yard with us every day. Well she is 17 weeks old. She is always on lead when there are any horses about. If she goes to the loo we pick it up and put it on the muck heap. We take for a walk up the farm track between the fields and let her off the lead but only where there are no horses at all out in the fields (all bring in about 6.30pm) but she stays by our side and doesn't run off. We put her back on the lead again as we come back down the track towards the yard or if we see any horses tied up outside their stable or being ridden. Wouldn't trust her with the horses (not to bite them but to run near their legs) and she would get stood on. She loves it at the farm and gets a warm friendly welcome from everyone as they have seen her since she was a tiny puppy.

Our yard rules are no dogs allowed, although the YO and her friend let their dogs run around when they are there so don't know how that would stand up if they were challenged.

It's a bloody nuisance having the dogs around the yard; interfering with your horse's feed when it's eating, interfering with water when you're washing up bucket, going in stable and messing everything up, drinking your horse's water, running around like a loon, the fact you have to close doors behind you incase their dogs get out, jumping up at you with muddy paws, running around in the manege when you're riding... I could go on...

I don't know what the obsession with bringing dogs to yards is, if I had my own yard I'd never allow dogs unless on a lead and then only if they're very well behaved.

Our YO has 2 GSD as guard dogs. They bark at a new person and then don't mind them 2nd time round! What I hate is how anal she is about picking up your horse crap the second your horse poos (including getting off if your horse poops on th way out for a hack!) yet her dogs crap everywhere! Let's be honest, there is nothing worse than treading in dog poo! I hate it!!

I dogs loose on a yard, i saw one get its head caved in by a horse once, and wouldnt like to see it again. also dogs that run around being a nuisance irritate me.
where i am now no dogs are allowed as the 2 big guard dogs would eat them
smile.gif

i used to take one of my dogs to my old farm but she stayed in the car, had to stop taking her because when she got bored she'd sit in the front and beep the horn
