do you take your dogs to your yard?
at my "summer yard" were alloed dogs- this has resulted in chaos. one family have about 5 dogs that are very aggressive and all the other dogs are abosolutley terrified of....we also have 2 huskies, again very agressive...it desnt make a nice place to take your dogs. we take ours there as little as possible, but with a 2 year old its great for her to have a run if im on the quad or something...but tbh i hate taking her up there, although she is very well trained- the others are not and jump all over her...
where as my "winter yard" say dogs ONLY on leads, so people dont bring dogs as its not practical to have your dog on the lead all the time.
dogs on a yard? yes or no?

NO!!!

A resounding NO!!

Dogs are a bloody pain in the arse.

and i'd go as far to say that they should be banned from Shows and Events too.

No.
I have only 1 grass livery, but she has been banned now from bringing her bl**dy awful hound from hell.

She has however ignored the fact she has been told no dog, so looks like i shall be livery free soon!

i have my collie with me at my field, my land and only my horses...
i hate badly behaved dogs on yards and if i had a livery yard no way would i let dogs on

if there are only a couple at a time and they leave the horses and other liveries alone. i adore dogs but hate being pestered by dogs who aren't being watched by their owners i.e constantly placing sticks in my lap, trying to pinch food or hanging around the horses. i also hate hate hate it if the owners dnt pick up after their dogs.

very occasionally take mine up but make sure they dnt go near anybody else and stay out of trouble at all times.

No. The YOs dogs are fine, they keep out of the way on the whole, and its their home anyway. I don't take my dogs as I can't keep an eye on them all the time and they could easily wander into the YOs garden or house which would irritate me a great deal. There is one owner who brings her dogs which drives me mad. They cock their legs up my rugs, scavenge through my stable if I leave the door open for a nanosecond, get under my feet and steal any feed left out. Id be quite happy for all liveries' dogs to be banned.

I have 3 dogs and my own yard, which I also live on. No one else can bring their dogs down. It wpuld cause havoc. previous yards I have kept my horse on also had a no dogs policy.

the yard im at there is 5 of us and we all have dogs so at one time there can be 7 dogs running around, good thing is they all get on great and my horse is used to dogs running around. i think any more dogs than this could be bad news. i dont take mine up all time cos he runs off and ignores me! bad dog!

only my three but its my yard!!!
grin.gif
...Im lucky only one livery has a dog which she brings on a lead anyway as she cant let it off cos it runs off..but given the question I normally say only if they are friendly to mine and kept on the lead and they CLEAR up after them at all times..

I am aloud to take my dogs up the yard on Sundays or if my parents are away (I work at the yard) I can take them with me and keep them in a stable and let they out at lunch/breaks. But I wouldn't have them on the yard when I was working or if the horses were out and about. On Sundays the yard is quiet (full livery so its the horses day off).

I dont have a dog, but have had in the family previously.
At my yard dogs are allowed, they are supposed to be on leads but most people seem to have them off the lead, which is annoying sometimes.
Generally i have not encountered any problems with dogs on yards, but i am with JM07, dogs at shows/events should not be allowed, especially if people cannot control them!

i was at a temporary yard a couple of years ago and a horse kicked one of the dogs in the head and completely shattered its skull like a melon.
the dog wasnt doing anything at all wrong, it was chained up next to its kennel and was a harmless old half blind half deaf thing

NO.

Dogs are allowed on my yard and it drives me mad.

One livery had two which ran riot and would chase the horses round and round the fields on a regular basis snapping at their heels. It made me absolutely furious and mine wasn't even the one being chased (only because she didn't run away, just turned and pulled faces at them).

I don't want to dodge other people's dogs when I'm riding/leading, I don't want to have to muck out with the stable door shut to keep the dogs from trashing it, I don't want to tread in dog sh*t and I don't want them p*ssing on my things.

I wouldn't take my dog to a yard for fear of what abracadabra mentioned - I'd hate her to get hurt. At my RS (which also has a lot of liveries) the yard owner and the head manager person (who lives onsite) have their dogs running around, but nobody else brings theirs. To be honest, even those two can be a bit of a pain sometimes (one of them likes to run around the outside of the school following the ponies when there's a lesson on, and the other barks at anything and everything!) - but on the plus side, all the horses are now totally dog-proof and wouldn't turn a hair no matter how much barking is going on.

I own my own yard and I have two dogs of my own, liveries dogs are only allowed if they are kept on leads. I will not have anyother dogs running loose. it is my dog's home and if any livery dogs attack either my dogs or any horses they are banned immediately. Dogs loose are a nightmare, horses being chased, bitten, dogs being bitten, dogmuck everywhere. absolute no no.

i can see your point. im fine with some of the dogs on our yard- they follow the owners at their heels, but some of them just are awful.
the pack of 5 have killed a monk jack before and another 2 killed a deer- infront of my mum and our 2 dogs, while she was kicking them off and they would not get off...my mum ended up beating them with a whip (owners permission) to get them off, but they are the kind of dogs who dont..
our YO just doesn't seem to care- she has 3 dogs, and 2 puppies who are fairly agressive aswell....
its annoying coz the dogs that behave are fine, but most people cannot control their dogs and so it causes chaos...
thankfully both our dogs are terrfified of horses- our polo pony made sure of that! she chased them out the field once, so they wont go anywhere near the horses- not in the horse barns and just sit under the lorry... but still theres always the risk!

I don't take my dogs as would be just another thing to keep an eye on, yard owner has dogs and they are fine and I actually thing its a good thing to have them there. They don't hassle the horses but do let the horses become used to having dogs around so helping to "dog proof" my baby horse (you never know what might jump out at you on a hack!) and also they would deter any break ins (hopefully!)

Yep I take my dogs to the yard - simply because they have to be on the lead all the time (otherwise they chase/attempt to murder any small fluffy things) so I know they are under control
smile.gif
I shut them in my stable when I ride, I clean up after them (I HATE people who dont do that
mad.gif
) and they are no problem.

Other liveries on the yard also bring their dogs and they are very little trouble TBH - except for a nasty little terrier which yaps incesantly, and tried to have a go at my greyhounds
mad.gif
I gently said to it "I wouldnt try it mate or they will bite your head off"
tongue.gif
- owner looked daggers at me, but now keeps said terrier under control
grin.gif

YO has FIVE dogs which run loose, and are a bit of a pain TBH as they do get in the way - but it is their yard, so of course I accept that
smile.gif

my mother used to take her dog with her when she sometimes used to do the horses, but it stayed in the car...when she got bored she'd climb into the front and lean on the horn
smile.gif

when I had 2 collies they both came with me with no problem at both yards, now old Ben has gone I only take 1, she does tend to wind up his lordship sometimes trying to round him up, but leaves the others alone, seems that she veiws him as "ours", he very occasionally chases her out of the field if he has a bag on, if she craps on the yard I pick it up, we did have an issue with another person not picking up their dog crap and it was addressed in our newsletter, my dog tends to chase squirells and rabbits more than anything else, been at this yard approx over 3 years and no serious complaints so far, so if dogs behave I dont see a problem.

Unfortunately yes and they are a pain. Would be one of the criteria I would look for in any new yard that no dogs or dogs only on lead.

i would have to say no and i love dogs! YO has her dog there but she is no trouble but would be chaos if there were dogs everywhere! my whippet would be VERY annoying i feel plus he is safer at home, can't get kicked in the head that way!

My livery yard allows dogs, and they can run free.
frown.gif

They pee and leave dog mess all over the yard, in the stables, on my hay, to the point that I had to buy tarpaulins to cover my hay inside the hay barn.
When I move yards, I will be actively looking for one where dogs are not allowed, as they are create a lot of extra work for me.

Our yard has a no-dogs policy. Two liveries do bring their dogs, by special dispensation, I assume. They are very very well behaved, and never cause any problems. One of them occasionally steals a carrot from my stash, but I can just get another one from its owner.
grin.gif
I don't mind well-behaved dogs, but I don't like seeing them run around loose at shows etc. And many people over-estimate how well-trained their dogs are, I think.

At livery yards then I've found dogs a nuisance. But at my yard, well it's my yard, with only me, only my horses, and only my dog

i totally agree with that my juping round was competely ruined by someones dog barking at my horse, and its all been down hill in the ring since then.

down my yard its dogs on leads which i agree with as my boy hates dogs and kicks out at them which can make it quite dangerous.

Our old yard they could come and also run free, but it was mainly a case of they went for a romp in the fields and never bothered the horses. New yard is no dogs, and TBH even though I used to take mine to the old place, I much prefer it. Busy yard so I wouldn't take them anyway. YO has 3, one a very very capable GS guard-dog, my gelding now couldnt care less about barking dogs thanks to him!
