dogs on yards?

Our yard allows dogs, the general ethos is to keep rules to a minimum and rely on consideration.. They're not a problem so its nice that they're there, even though I'm not particularly into dogs. There are a couple who have had a tendency to chase horses which annoyed me, but the YM sorted it and it stopped. I can see why they'd have to be banned on big yards, but our little yard tends to deal with individual problems and not go for blanket bans. I think its the right way to be.
 
Not strictly banned but strongly discouraged, occasionally I take my BC, he really enjoys it but he is noisy and pees on the hay if not watched.

I do only take him if I'm not actually riding, he gets to go poo picking with me!

I wouldn't take the other two, one would hunt, kill and barbeque the sheep and the other is a head banger!

Love the new yard in the day a dog free zone, BUT come 5pm there are drouling mutts all over the place and they always get in the way. One gets tied up in the walk way i am fed up of tripping up over the damm lead. If you sit down for a chat and a coffee it pulls its lead accross your legs which really hurts, that after it has tried to lick your face and moulted hair all over you. It cant be left lose it is too batty. Another one barks at the horses heels fortunatly nothing has kicked it yet.

I have nothing against dogs but mine stays at home.
 
I take my dog to work with me so he's on the yard for a few hours in the morning and then usually in the office for the rest of the day, but he can potter about where he likes. He's only 5 months old but I've been taking him since he was 9wks so he's sensible around the horses. The YO has dogs and the liveries and competitors bring dogs but we don;t have any problems.

I take all my dogs down to do my own horses and again don't have any problems. The YO has 4 dogs and there are up to 12 livery dogs but they all get on fine. My dogs tend to sleep on a rug by my stables and then they wait in a stable if I don;t take them out hacking.
 
we're not allowed dogs on our yard as the YO's dog doesnt get on with other dogs however we are allowed to walk the dogs on the estate which is good the only people who are allowed dogs on the yard is our farriers

i would hate to be at a yard with dogs to its for horses
 
Dogs are allowed at our yard as one of the fields I(right next to yard) has a public footpath running through it so owner can't stop us using that even if she wanted to. One of the farm dogs can pick on bitches on the actual yard. She sees it as her territory but she's fine if they're in the field, so I have to be very careful when I take my dog. I only let her out of the car if the sheep are in the bottom fields so she can't see them(I've never allowed any dog of mine near sheep unless on a lead, just in case. She'd probably be fine but it's not a risk I'm willing to take) if I'm the only one there and if the farm dog is either working or in her kennel for the night. My dog is very well behaved, doesn't leave my side unless she's playing with the farm lab who adores her and even then she won't leave my sight. She leaves the horses alone (in fact does huge detours to avoid going too near them) except to steal my boy's tea while he's eating. He pulls faces at her and pretends to care, but would never do anything!

If the farm bitch is around my dog stays in the car until I've done the horse then she's let out on the lead until we're on the public footpath and then she's let off. Other owners with dogs (as in males) can let them go on the yard as the bitch doesn't bother them.
 
No, my YO has 5 lovely dogs, all brought up around horses. But even 1 of those upset Captain and he nearly picked it up! So new dogs are an absolute no! I have 2 dogs of my own and they never go up,think of the damage they could do to horses, as they are not very used to them.
 
I dont think dogs should be on yards without leads especially in yards where there are cats present.

At one yard I was at, another livery thought it was appropriate to let her dog and let her children set the dog onto my cat. Needless to day, horse, cat and myself moved to somewhere else.
 
four of us have dogs on our yard, they are kept beside us all the time and don't get to run around without us. Mine is the only bitch and she won't wee or poo in the barn or a stable, she askes to get out if she needs. Everybody cleans after their dog so there is no problem.
I think if everyone is sensible and respect the other liveries, then there shouldn't be an issue

As long as they are well behaved and under control.

Lots of horse people have dogs too and to leave them at home all day is often not on, but , I reiterate, they must be well behaved and under control!

I am lucky enough to have my own place now and welcome the above. I do expect owners to pick up after them mind. Some yards write something into their contracts .

My old dog used to ride out with me so often came to the yard. Not sure I would be very happy taking my present dog on someone else's yard mind, as he's a bit of a barker and likes to help me sort the horses!! But as it's my place and my horses that's fine. When I've had someone else at the yard I ensure he doesn't get in their way. Having said that, i make it clear that he is around and that if they don't like dogs, cats and small children mine is not the place for them!

Luckily my previous dog, when i was a livery, was an absolute angel! I once moved my mare and foal onto a yard only to be told, once in situ that , obviously my dog could not come on the yard! As my dog had been with me the 4 times I visited and was sitting to heel angelically as i signed the contract and we had discussed how she came riding with me and they had commented on how lovely she was, i was gobsmacked. I 'begged' to be allowed to have her there on the proviso that she would be good as gold, or i would leave. They knew i thought she was welcome and were quite happy to get my 2 horses there, on 'false pretenses'. Not impressed!

So, how about children on yards!!! I used to prefer not to have kids everywhere, but now I have a blue minibeast of my own i seem to have changed my mind....strange that!! of course i do expect children to be well behaved and under control - and on a lead at all times !!!LOL!

Depends on the sort of yard you are after. And I think our needs change depending on our own circumstances, horses, etc. Each to there own!
 
No. If I could choose, I'd ban dogs on my yard. In fact, oh, I do have my way as we are the only ones there (except owner of the yard and land who does have a very well-behaved, rarely seen, spaniel).

On my last yard, it was an absolute disaster. The yard owner had two wippets, a jack russel, a german shepard, a spaniel of some kind and some kind of boxer, plus her son had a couple of dogs and he was there every day. One of the liveries had 3 large greyhounds but he kept them in his vehicle when on the yard, mainly. The YO's dogs were pain enough - there wasn't a day went by where I didn't find sh*t in my hay or one of the dogs weed up my rug hanging over the door, or another dog chased my horse. Her yard, her dogs, her rules, but if I could choose, I would not allow dogs on yards; and if I owned a yard and had dogs, they would have no access to the yard.

On my yard before that, people brought dogs on and just let them poo everywhere, didn't pick it up, dogs making a big racket and getting under horses' feet, slobbering all over people.

NO, just NO. And don't get me started on dogs at shows!
 
Everyone at our yard is very responsible and we are allowed to take our dogs up, and because of this we have horses who are totally at ease with dogs, and this is a very good thing!

I've had horses all my life, but the latest horse I bought (6 months ago) was very frightened and wary of dogs at first. He'd snort at them, and on hacks he'd drop a shoulder and try and run the other way if a loose dog trotted towards him. However in the last 6 months he's had so much exposure to dogs on the yard, he is now 100% comfortable with them in any situation.

I have friends at nearby yards where dogs are banned, and I can honestly say that all of their horses are much warier of dogs than the horses on our yard.
 
Re my post above. Dogs on yards only works if everyone is responsible! Dog mess is a very taboo subject on our yard and everyone who has a dog has to have bags to clean up immediately any they see - and we don't have any problems at all with mess. Our hay and feed rooms are out of bounds to the dogs. And there are certain times when all the dogs have to be off the yard, ie at feed times, and turn out/brining in times. Everyone keeps to the rules and we don't get any problems.

My old yard was like this and I hated it. Its a safety issue for the dogs as well as the horses and no-one used watch their dogs to make sure they cleaned up after them. There was dog poo everywhere - even in the school - of course everyone claimed it wasn't their dog!

At my current yard we only have the YO dogs and they are well behaved and only come through when they are on their walks. No-one else brings their dogs down.

dogs are allowed on mine. mine is very well behaved and stays next to me at all times even off the lead. but another livery brought hers down which has now killed a chicken because she never watched it needless to say that one has been banned now

Generally they are shut in the garden or stay out the way.

OH brings his two dogs with him and me sometimes but he is always with them, they're not left to run wild on their own

Any yard owner that allows dogs (however well behaved they may be) on their yard is an accident waiting to happen. They can only blame themselves if there is an accident and they are at the receiving end of a court action.
 
I've always brought my dogs to the yard, a rott and 2 JRTs. It's not as dog friendly as it used to be as the late YO had 7 dogs (all very badly behaved

) and sometimes with visiting dogs we would walk 15 dogs over the field. Now there's only one of her dogs left and my 3 are they only regular off lead visitors.

It's a grass livery yard and TBH if my dogs weren't allowed I would probably move. I work full time and would spend less time with my horses if I knew the dogs were home alone. I also wouldn't feel as safe walking the top fields (over a mile from the yard) on my own as the dogs are a deterrant to our local thugs and nutters, they also always tell me if there's anyone behind a tree. my terriers do a great job keeping the rodents down in the hay barn as the farm cats wouldn't sully their paws with pesky mice and all the dogs will see off foxes from the chickens. Any dodgy visitors are given the impression that the rott lives there to discourage any late night visits, so to speak and all are chicken, horse, cow and sheep safe. In saying that, I think they earn their ticket to visit!Oh, and I always clean up after them, however they will clean up any food left out

The few people that complain about them are the same people who whinge about my cob being tied up on the yard "because he fidgets and it upsets their horse" I've been there 12 years btw
