Well in the near future i aim.to get a german shorthaired pointer puppy. I work at a kennels & a yard so can take pup to work with me. Kennels is no.prob but im worrying about yard.

Just wondering how you all managed to do with your puppies when young? Obviously when older & trained pup will be free with me whilst mucking out etc. Shut somewhere whilst schooling & the hope is to take him hacking with me as can go straight from yard onto tracks/bridleways!

How did u teach your dog to cone out hacking? Be happy to stay in a stable etc. Just generally what did you do with a young puppy at a yard?

:)

Well we took our Rottie puppie up to the farm just before he’d had his second jab so about 11 weeks … he’s always been free off the lead (in fact he is in general unless on the road) so he’s free to roam about whilst Im mucking out and joins me in the stable whilst Im grooming etc.

Going for rides if he comes he comes with my poor fiancé - on a lead until we get onto the moors and then he just trots along side us off the lead … occasionally he’ll bark at them but they’re used to him now, give him a quick ears back and snarl and he runs a mile … he’s 9 months now. Unfortunately we're located just off a main road but if we werent he'd come on every ride with us!

Maybe when you leave him in stable do it for short periods at first (i.e when you go to muck heap, leave him whilst going to the local shop) and see how he goes? Just remember food and water and he'll be fine

Things do tend to take a little longer (he does chase wheelbarrow wheels and tries to attack the yard brush whilst sweeping up) but he’s fun to have around! Good luck!

I have a 6 month old german short haired X wirehaired pup, and he's been brilliant! From 12 weeks old he's been free to mooch about as he pleases, and he stays in the general area. He's a soppy mummys boy though, and doesn't stray far =)
He has working parents and a strong hunting instinct, but its never been a problem as we worked on his recall and retrieving from when he was very young.
Here he is ...

More recently, pinning the cat down to snuffle her fur https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net...784155310_1591083730_2805105_1287850767_n.jpg

our pup was a nightmare and still is and hes 7 this year.
used to rent a field so he'd come and do as he please but he was more interested in eatting the horse pooo! he would eat like there was no tomorrow, so tried all the different muzzles on the market to stop it but his tounge would still get lots!
in the end i gave up... as he was then going number 2's in the night because of it!!
so dont take him now
