You'll have to excuse me as I don't post on this board, just occasionally have a read and look at some pics so this could be a numpty question!

Have never owned a dog myself but have just got back from visiting my auntie in Wales who has the most beautiful, albeit crazy, lab collie cross. Me and my cousin took him up the mountain for a walk this morning and as soon as our backs were turned he'd roll in any fox poo he could find! My cousin said unless you can stop him in time he always does it but she doesn't know why.

I was just wondering, why do they do this? Is it something to do with the scent, is it more threatening to other dogs maybe?

I think it's just because they are disgusting creatures by nature, several of mine would roll in any poo they could find, cattle, horse, sheep, chickens, the ranker the better, a gsd I had thought the manure heap was an all you could eat buffet, but I always knew where to find him lol

Haha oh no! I hadn't thought of that, maybe it's just for fun ;)

I have heard theories that it is a way to mask their scent from prey? Not sure how true that is....but for most dogs it's just instinct & natural behaviour. Dogs obviously think it is an amazing smell!

Luckily for me I have a dog who does not like rolling in poo, getting muddy or wet. He is not a wimp by any means, he just jumps over mud/puddles!....makes my life a lot easier!

The worst my lab has ever done was roll in a rotting sheep corpse - the stink was horrendous and driving home with her in the car was nauseating.......fox poo, badger poo and cow pats are all fair game too but nothing compares to the dead sheep!

Our other dog often goes to sleep in the muck trailer, then expects to come into the house and sit on the sofa.

I do sometimes question why we have them!

Hmph, mine used to wait until the bloke and I were having a romantic moment and then SPLAT - straight into a dead badger's ribcage

My dobie once rolled on a rotting deer carcass. It had maggots on it! It was disgusting!
