Dogs staying in self catering.

We have self catering cottages and don't normally allow dogs. Bout some people who have been coming here for years from Germany have got their dog all rabies jabbed up and so on so he can come and stay. I don't quite have the heart to say they can't bring him. We will do our best to keep our dogs away although I can't keep the lurcher in the garden. Our main worry is them leaving it in the house and it barking and trashing everything or it running wild and killing all the chickens and chasing the horses. Its a border collie and watching how they treat our dogs when they are here I should think it is spoiled rotten.
So I have done 3 simple rules...
1. Dogs must be on a lead at all times .
2. Dogs cannot be left alone in the cottages
3. Any damage on the farm, in the cottages or out, caused by dogs must be repaired/replaced by you.

What do you think? Does that cover everything? I don't want it to sound - to them - as though I don't trust them

Sometimes for self-catering, the owners ask for an extra (returnable) deposit in advance to cover any additional damage, or for a small surcharge for extra cleaning, sometimes both. Also, there's normally a condition that dogs can't go on the furniture.

I would just clarify that 'on a lead at all times' means outdoors - it seems a little harsh to make them keep it on a lead in the kitchen!;)
 
LOL! Good point about lead. In fact, once its out on open farmland they can let it off, I just don't want it running wild round the yard. Its a city dog so I expect farm life will be very exciting. My German is as good as their English so distinctions can be hard to clarify.
We aren't going to ask for a deposit as we really know them quite well - they have stayed here for a month every year for the last ten years.
 
We are off to a cottage soon.
The rules for the dog are:
1. To be kept to ground floor only.
2. Not allowed on the furniture.
3. If left alone, must be crated.

We have also sent a cheque of £125 that they will rip up if no damage is done but will use if the dog does something he shouldn't do.
I think those arrangements are fair enough.
 
The rules sound good. I expect that as they know you and your property so well they wouldn't bring their dogs if it would case hassle. And hopefully your relationship means they would respect it too. I'd prob do the same in your situation
 
When we stayed at a holiday cottage with the dogs, there was a charge of £25 per dog for the 4 day stay.

their rules were -

* Dogs not allowed on any furniture.

* Dogs not to be left in the cottage alone.

* Dogs to be kept under control at all times.
 
We take Harley away all the time

We've had a mixture of all the following rules and never had a problen with any of them

1 Dogs to be on lead outside the cottage while on the farm at ALL times
2 pick up ALL mess your dog makes
3 Dogs not to be left alone inside the cottage
4 Dogs not allowed on furniture
5 Dogs not allowed in bedroom
 
We take our dogs with us to hotels and holiday cottages. I agree with most rules but would not take them anywhere if they could not come into the bedroom as they sleep in our room at home and would probably keep us awake if suddenly shut in another room. The most appreciated facility we found at a hotel recently was an enclosed grass area for the use of the dogs as late night and early morning toilet outings were much more convenient for all. We kept it clean of course.
I will only book cottages with an enclosed garden from now on as jumping into wellies on a wet morning for a 6.30 am quick walk to a convenient bit of grass is not part of my ideal holiday!
