Dogs survive on kibble but thrive on a meat based low carb diet.

Another study: https://www.nature.com/articles/hdy201648. It is still highly controversial and I have found from experience that some individuals do best with mostly meat and others do not. I guess the genetic adaptation necessary to digest starch is higher in some breeds/individuals than others. I am always a bit weary of studies sponsored by commercial interests: we make a meat based dog food, so it is best for dogs...or vice versa. I believe the dog in front of me. Some dogs need a higher fibre diet than others do to have a healthy digestion, a fact ignored by people who rubbish 'fillers' in dog foods. Where is the scientific evidence that small hard poops are best? Or is it the fact that humans prefer to pick a lesser quantity of dry poop? I do not pretend to have any definitive answers but I have become a bit cynical of all this 'science'. Sorry to sound negative, I usually agree with your posts! :)

George and Rudy must be long lost brothers!
I personally like a good raw diet for mine but Rudy can't handle raw chicken. So I feed a good kibble and add healthy table scraps, turkey necks and beef bones. it works for us.

My analysis is ever so scientific - I’ve actually fed both diets to my dogs over the years and I know which one they preferred eating!

They had no health problems as a result of feeding the raw diet and looked fantastic on it ? I think people may perhaps have the impression that ‘small hard poops’ are almost like constipation, which is definitely not the case.

Personally I don’t need to read scientific papers (or, conversely, papers from dog food manufacturers!) to persuade me what to feed my dogs, I use the evidence in front of me ?

As a generalisation, I do believe raw is absolutely the best thing to feed.
However it doesn't suit right now, so I feed kibble with a bit of raw every now and again.
If they are sick, tins of Chappie sort them right out.
I had one who couldn't tolerate any sort of meat at all and he tore all his own hair out scratching.
It doesn't change my beliefs expressed in the first paragraph and I think it's sad that the dog was so intensively bred on lines known now to carry allergies, that he as a canine, could not eat meat.
As with Squee, if it works I feed it, if it doesn't, I don't.
I did find the raw evangelism a bit threatening/overbearing when I first joined the forum, but I agree with whoever it was (maybe KarynK?) who pointed out that those teeth were not designed to crunch vegetables ;)

How typical of the forum that this sort of conversation is promptly labelled “kibble bashing” and has to attract loads of people defensively stating that they feed their dogs kibble and they are the worlds healthiest dogs ever.....

It’s really not a competition.

Feed what you want to feed (or preferably, what suits your dog!)

Just because someone has another view doesn’t mean you have to instantly leap to the defence of your view

Yes this is ironic coming from me before everyone points it out ?? - hopefully lockdown is making me more mellow and appreciate what’s really important in life ?

I have a dog who can't eat meat or fish
One who can't eat eggs
One who can't eat beef without getting the poops
One who loves raw and it's the only time he pauses for breath. He reacts to one of the kibbles that I have fed.
The rest eat anything and I mean anything amd everything.
If it's been dead and rotting for days or weeks it's still classes as a delicacy.
I would rather feed everyone a raw diet, I believe that pulling meat from a bone, feathers from the carcass and chewing and tearing are natural ways for a dog to eat and that the dog gains a lot from this.
I scatter feed kibble as at least they are not stood at a bowl wolfing the food in as fast as possible.

I used to be very evangelical about raw food but a lot of this was down to losing a dog to cancer and the oncologist saying it was down to the kibble. I think there are some very good kibbles, but I’d avoid supermarket brands and check what’s in what you’re feeding. Certain (a lot of!) dry food available in the supermarket contains carcinogenics and I do my best to avoid those given I lost a dog to cancer.

I remember the day when you used to feed cheap shit museli as standard - anyone remember Vitalin? It did smell lovely when it was covered in warm water though ??

OH used to feed valu mix, does it still even exist? I t made Bakers look like the pinnacle of good nutrition.

Our Dane is on mostly raw, a mug of kibble most mornings in addition, but we have an amazing chap who sorts out their allergies and intolerances, and all our small animals have their own customised raw diet, the cat voms up chicken and is on fish for example. She can have gluten, dog can literally only have potato, no other starch. It's worked for every single person we've referred to him too.

Knowing how important the gut microbiota are to human health (immune system, metabolism, cholesterol, central nervous system, production of serotonin - which occurs mainly in the gut) and how we can influence and improve our microbiome, I thought the article was interesting and decided to share - simple as that.

I thought the article was food for thought, pun intended.

The thread title was the one used when the article was shared on a FB group, I saw no reason to change it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't dog poos meant to be like that though/that's what helps maintain properly functioning anal glands? They're not supposed to look like ours.

Signed, long-standing member of Poo Watch, where we swap texts and pics about colour, consistency and regularity if one of our dogs has a dicky tummy ???

Poo watch is a thing!? The dogs here think I’m nuts ?

The best one was when three of us were crowded round a shit having an actual in-depth discussion about it, in a car park, at a competition, in Holland. People thought we were nuts.
I was minding same dog a few weeks earlier (I own him now) and had to send his previous owner reports on every bowel movement ???

I immediately thought of Vitalin when I saw muesli mentioned ?. Sadly we lost a dog to Gdv after he was fed a small amount of muesli meal , he’d won it , ironically , and we were just trying it . Obviously can’t prove it was that but within 30 mins of eating he was bloating ?. He had surgery but only lived 24 hours .
