Dogs survive on kibble but thrive on a meat based low carb diet.

I immediately thought of Vitalin when I saw muesli mentioned ?. Sadly we lost a dog to Gdv after he was fed a small amount of muesli meal , he’d won it , ironically , and we were just trying it . Obviously can’t prove it was that but within 30 mins of eating he was bloating ?. He had surgery but only lived 24 hours .

That’s so sad MM ?

Thinking of old fashioned dog foods, do you remember Woffle? I remember it came in rectangular blocks, but goodness knows what it was actually made of ?

oh god yes , it stank ! Going back even further , when I was a little girl my mum and gran ran boarding kennels . They used to go once a week to the “dog food lady” at the market who sold nothing but raw meat, it was then cooked up in a huge pan in the kennel kitchen . When I was quite a bit older I realised it was actually horse meat ?

About 10 years ago we had a foxhound bitch here to whelp and had buckets of horse meat delivered every other day.

Years ago a friend who had a lot of dogs (20+) would go to the local knackers and bring home dustbins full of lights (lungs ect) which she cooked in large coppers/boilers for them. The place stank.

What a terrible thing to happen. ? So sorry that you lost your dog this way. I used to feed my dogs muesli food but never would now, I've heard about the connection with bloat. One of my dogs had bloat after eating cheap, dry kibble, not muesli. Fortunately she was ok after a few days in the vets, and didn't need surgery.

Back when I rode, one of the school horses needed to be put down. She was spoiled and then put on a trailer to go over to the hounds kennel.

And I agree, cheap, dry kibble is the kiss of death for a lot of dogs. Neighbor fed his lab mix the stuff though and the dog lived into his mid-teens. Totally not fair.

Planete, I think this might interest you. :) It's about 8 pages long so I've quoted a paragraph to whet your appetite ;)

The Role of the Canine Gut Microbiome and Metabolome in Health and Gastrointestinal Disease.

"The gut microbiome contributes with metabolic functions, protects against pathogens, educates the immune system, and, through these basic functions, affects directly or indirectly most of our physiologic functions. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter, is mostly produced in the intestine, which has led to the development of the gut-brain axis concept (1). A healthy and stable microbiome can simultaneously act as pro- and anti-inflammatory, keeping a balance to prevent excessive inflammation while still being able to promptly respond to infections (2)"

Thanks SD. It will take me some time to read. None of my dogs fed dry food have suffered from GI diseases and they have firm dry small poops. I also had to cope with their occasional tummy upsets when fed raw meat, this does not seem to happen any longer. The contamination of commercial raw cat food with TB which has affected pets and some owners very badly is also a niggling worry, as well as my vulnerable health status. There are many facets to this, not all of them science led. In an ideal world there would be enough good quality spare meat to feed our pet carnivores, it would be affordable to all pet owners and our planet could happily sustain such a consumption of good quality meat for the millions of pets in the first world. Reality is different. Pet owners can get obsessed with 'doing their best ' for their pets, but I prefer a balance of as good a health as possible with ingredients sustainably available and affordable. No point reducing my consumption of meat to save the planet if I put kilos of fresh meat into my dogs when they can be quite healthy on a good quality dry food made with the by-products of the meat industry which would go to waste otherwise. I tried feeding minced raw food as it is also a by-product of the meat industry but the standards turned out to be worse than in the dry food industry when I looked into it. Finding a fistful of worms into the offal I had bought was the last straw for me. Not illegal apparently!

My first 10 dogs were fed on kibble with a forkful of tinned or sometimes sardines or an egg. One of them had multiple allergies and I had to search to find a kibble she could eat. As I think you will know, dog number 10 had several health problems and developed lymphocytic plasmacytic IBD and multiple allergies and out of necessity I cooked for him with a very limited choice of food. It was at that time I became more aware of dog nutrition and an avid label reader.

Dog number 11 is an N of 1 trial :D - the first dog I have tried on raw. I have taken the easy way out and buy raw complete. She loves it and seems well. All her treats are natural, too.

Initially I was giving her a small amount of Eden as I could use it in treat dispensing toys or hide it around the house/garden for her to sniff out but I have stopped giving her it now.

The cost of feeding raw would have been an issue when I had multiple dogs but she is an "only dog" so I can spoil her.:)

Her poo seems pretty normal to me, just less of it - which is a bonus with a very large dog;). I wonder if we should take our lead from CC and have a "stool comparison" thread :D
