Dogs that need space but people will allow their dogs near

Why is it that people do this?
When I was walking home from the horses today we came across a young german shepherd and her mid 40's owner. Both dogs were on leads luckily - we were on the pavement next to an extremely busy road. The shephard got all excited and wanted to play with Poppy so I went back to a side path. The owner told me "it's ok my dog is very friendly" so I told her mine isn't, she loves people but really doesn't like other dogs!

What does she do? That's right! She follows me into the path and allows her dog to sniff all over mine Luckily she'd left enough space for me to get Poppy out up the pavement again because she was pulling the "I'm going to snap at you" face. It really confuses me that people obviously don't listen and she's lucky that Poppy is all snap and growl and no bite!

Oh for goodness sake, Were you positive enough about the situation? left no room for doubt?....... Get a stick and do the snapping and growling bit youself...... why should your dog have to do it for you.

Sorry it sounds like you're irritated with my post? It was just a mini rant.

Well I think saying my dog isn't friendly, she loves people but really doesn't like dogs ought to be clear enough especially since I purposfully moved her out of the way so they could get past without incident... apparently not though

She doesn't "have to do it for me" I make sure people know and I either mover her off and get between her and the other dog if it springs out on us or put her on the lead when I see another dog coming.

It's been months and months since she snapped at another dog. It's just a shame other dog owners don't listen to the message and let their dogs get in my dogs face or even worse jump all over her

But dog, like pony/horse/child owners/possessors think that their own can do no wrong......... (see winkey smiley person who eludes me)l do annoy me intensely.

I am generally irritated by most animal "people" or child "people" come to that!!!!! so nothing personal regarding yourself.

I know my dog is a PITA but it's totally our own fault for not socialising her properly at the start It's under control in so far as that's possible though.

Strangely she's fine with some dogs, she immediately submits to any sort of toy dog breed and she's always nice to the very elderly collie who we see frequently, don't know why unless it's that she knows he won't jump all over her. She's fine with my sister's dog now but it took a while for them to sort out where they stood with each other

My dog is exactly the same- if he see's a greyhound/lurcher etc he will submit to them and want to be their best friend-even if they snap at him. But god forbid a spaniel or a fluffy dog appears and he want's to kill it!!!

we come across people like that everyday- even when my dog is on the lead, growling and snapping they just seem oblivious to it- but if my dog actually bit theirs (he never would! but if he did...) it would be all my fault!

Drives me nuts. I don't give a monkeys how friendly other dogs are or how they just want to play! One of mine just wants to rip other dogs' throats out, so give him space!

It astounds me that people want to use my dog to exercise theirs (badly trained, no recall so I have to use the fact that my dogs are trained to recall to retrieve their dog for them, too! Or I have to interrupt my walk, recall my dog, their dog then comes back )

We have a really cool massive field with woods behind nearby. There's lots of 'rough' for search and retrieve gun dog type training. Unbelievably, people will insist on trying to get their dog to play with ours when we're obviously training or will deliberately change course to interfere. There's loads of space, I don't see why they have to stop us using the tiny area we wanted. I will always get out of people's way as I don't think I own the place, but I avoid others if they're playing/retrieving, why don't we get offered the same courtesy? Some girl with a lab started throwing her ball straight at us yesterday as we were placing three dummies to train Bear to go in different directions. Bonkers.

One bloke stood and watched as his lab puppy bounced around the OH who was restraining Zak this week. Zak was clearly trying to get to the dog to kill it and the owner made zero effort to recall.

I share your pain I went on a nice walk in the Forest of Dean yesterday, my small-dog-unfriendly greyhound was on the lead all the time (he had 21 teeth out on Thursday, so I didn't want to muzzle him) but the 3 girls were all off lead. We met 3 lots of people, each time I called mine to me and put them on the lead in plenty of time, each time the other idiot owners let their dogs run up to mine

I got the usual "dont worry he is friendly" to which I replied "well mine aren't" (a bit of an exaggeration really, only Hoover is unfriendly) to which idiot owners said "I dont mind, if he gets bitten it is his own fault" or "he needs to be taught a lesson"

I was so annoyed with the last woman with her over weight under exercised badly trained dalmatian that when she said that I said very forcefully "well I dont want my dogs to be on the wrong end of it" - she looked at me like I was out of order Morons

I just love how people argue that I should let Zak play, it's not fair on him etc. yeah, I'm a terrible owner for not letting my dog attack yours! And the suggestions are hilarious! Have you tried muzzling him and letting him off? Yes, then he has free rein to attack but not defend himself. Super idea! He's in my sight at all times and we go to places where mostly no-one else goes. Any more brilliant ideas, genius?!

God I get that too! Well I mind! If my dog ever did actually bite rather than just warn other dogs off you know I'd get taken to court and possibly have to put down an otherwise fab dog all because some idiot couldn't or wouldn't control their dog!
