just curious most people at ours have dogs and bring them up to do their horse but do any of you take the out hacking with you if so what breeds?? :)

I've started riding out with my Pointer who's nuts. I can only do it because we can access the woods without going on any roads and my horse is proving to be a saint. I'm hoping to take him hunting for the first time next season so want to be 100% sure he'll be fine with the hounds.

My friend brings her two labs out when we go hacking. They are very well trained, they run around but always come to the horses heels when called and stay by the horses when cars go past.
We have hundreds of dogs up are yard and sometimes it all gets a bit much when they are all play fighting, barking and running around. They all run behind the hedges next to the ménage and stuff when were trying to school
too!
It's good for my horse though, I can safely say he's dog proof!

Yup my whippet comes hacking when I don't go on the road... She loves it, esp when we go fast - she runs round and round like a nutter!!
And B is super good with her, when I call she comes and walks behind him, I was worried at first, but he is hound proof, so I'm lucky in that respect!

Wouldn't dare take my dog out with my horse mainly as we have a lot of busy lanes and been a spaniel, he has no road sense and sniffs overtake safety!!! His attitude is "I can't hear you as I have important news to read"!! He wouldn't think twice about darting across the road in front of a car because there was a very nice sniff over the other side.

cool was thinking of taking my lab out with me she's very good bit old now but just when i walk through the woods etc was just curious because we leave them in the office but would be nice to have company and sully like dogs anyway...

I have recently started taking my jack russell out with me. We live on a private estate and can get into woods without going on or near a road. She really enjoys it if she is sniffing around my horse slows down and waits for her!

My friend takes her working cocker out on hacks with us and he is well behaved. Used to take my previous staffie out as somehow I had managed to do a better job on training with her and she would stick with me regardless. Can't do it with my 2 now as boy wants to talk to all humans (regardless of whether they want to or not) and the old lady has selective hearing at times. Shame because we are pretty much completely off road where we are but it is busy in terms of cyclists and walkers..!

I occasionally take my flatcoat retriever out with me on the quiet lanes near us but I invariably end up riding almost backwards for the whole hack, shouting his name and encouraging him to keep up! Doesn't make for a relaxing ride!!

I don't personally as you can guarantee that the dog will go in front of a car, and I'll spend my lovely hacking time worrying about the b****y dog! And the lurcher is a bit too chase happy... cats and deer are his favourites!

I do have quite a few friends who do though - one even used to lead her lurcher from a lunge line from her P2P horse, going through gates etc etc, they never had a problem - I would be tangled in seconds, and probably tie the horse and dog together then pull the whole lot down!

I am sure my springer would be the same as this! He has times when he doesn't "hear" as he is too engrossed with important sniffing and stuff. As for the labrador, he would never keep up and would find it all too worrying!! Also would loose him as soon as he sniffed out a bin!!!

I take my dog out with me- she's a GSDx. She loves it, I can only take her with the friendly horse as other ones doesnt 'do' dogs. Im very lucky tho as i can go for miles without going on the roads.

Dogs are banned at my livery yard and I'd never take mine out for a hack with me from the yard because there's too much roadwork. She loves coming with us when we go to the forests or the beach though!

Not riding but driving. as soon as I get one of the horses out of the paddocks, they all jump up on one of our carts in anticipation, they love coming out. they even have their own places :) once we're out the big Bouvier de Flandres trots along beside. We could never go out driving without them. They think it's quite normal :D We probably look a bit weird loaded up with dogs on a carriage; but I don't care, it's all good fun.

My border collie loves to chase cars so wouldn't dream of taking him on the roads with me. However, if I'm schooling in the field he loves it and continually runs circles round us. Then he literally emmerses his front legs and head in the water bucket to cool down and then starts circling us again. It's like Ultimate Herding for him and my mare doesn't mind a bit!xx

I used to take my lab out when I was at my previous yard, as we didn't need to use the lanes at all. He loved it, and my horse didn't bat an eyelid when the dog got tired and slotted in right behind him, literally at my horse's heels!

I'm at a different yard now, and whereas I pretty sure he'd be fine on the lanes, I don't know for sure. He does have selective hearing and is fairly elderly at 11 years old, so if he chose not to keep up for whatever reason (person with treats in pocket, dustbins) I'd be doing what another poster said, and be riding along constantly looking behind, calling his name. So instead he comes poo picking with me! :)

I used to ride out with a friend who took her collie with her everywhere, was so well trained used to walk on the banks of roads, wore a reflective, kept up in the fields when we went faster etc! Took out a friends jack russel....... never again complete pain!!

Very irresponsible IMO to take a dog out on the road (unless 1 track) whilst riding. How can you be sure you can keep control 100% of the time? What if he sniffs a bitch on heat or she sees a rabbit or cat or squirell? You cannot, unless the dog is on a lead be sure it won't run out in front of a car.

A friend of mine used to take her terrier out with her while riding but we had immediate access to woodland from the yard.

I always take my dog, don't know what bread she is. She's been round horse's for years, she's 14 years old this year. We some times go to Linacre where there's a lot of walkers etc, I always take a lead rope encase I need it on her. We ride to the main road I get off put her on the lead rope, walk her and lead King. It's only a short bit of road but theres a lot of bends and it's 40mph. On the back roads I just call her and she knows she has to go on the grass, so me and King are between her and any cars that come.

I am at the min training my 13 week old pup to do the same, we're just playing in fields at the min then I can take both, when OH is not around.

Like button :D

I take my jack with me because I'm lucky enough not to have to go near a road. Must confess I haven't for a bit tho cos horse started racing with him and it got a bit hairy last time!! Pathetic I know must get on to it again!! :)

I take my lurcher, JRT and standard poodle cross to the yard (3 others stay at home because they are oldies and grumpies). I don't ride out with the lurcher or JRT cos they are naughty but Sidney the poodle x does come out over the fields or if I box up to the beach or forest. He grew up with my horse and he actually helps if Kane decides to nap (which he does alot!) and does have an amazing ability of running right beside me without getting under his feet!!!! Funnily enough my horse is blind in his left eye and Sidney will always walk or run on Kane's left...it's like he knows he needs some eyes to help him.

I've ridden out for years with Sidney but never cease to get a huge grin because as a child I always wanted to go out hacking with my horse and my dog running alongside. :D
