Dogs- which to choose!!

Collies and Labs every time.Lovely dogs, just the right kind of size and they are beautiful.Collies are easy to train and just love working with their owners, and as you are on a farm they are ideal farm dogs.

Wow, he sounds like he was a handful! I do really like collies, and they have always been a favourite breed after I fell in love with one when I was about 4 years old. Can't say I have ever met one that wasn't a nice dog either. Will definitely look into a collie, or a collie cross. 1 of the things I find hard to get around though is a lot are farm bred (which isn't so much as issue, as these are usually working lines), but how do I know if these 'breeders'/ farmers are just simply having litters as often as they can off these dogs to make extra money? I don't mean as in a puppy farm, as in a proper farm that grows crops/ livestock farm etc.

If I bought from a breeder instead of rescuing, it would definitely have to be a reputable breeder who isn't just breeding as many as possible, and is instead breeding quality dogs. KC registered is not something I particularly want or need, as I know of the issues with many KC dogs.
Look at Wiccaways rescue, they specialize in Collies and they are very selective where their dogs go.My one issue with the Collie is they can be sound sensitive so maybe not great with guns.

My GSP and the ones I know take walking but not ridiculous amounts. At least an hour a day of running and then are happy and chilled. Maybe some working strains take more, so maybe check out lines? This morning for example he pottered up the yard with me for 45 mins, bit if ball playing, then went to agility training and now he's shattered!!

They are very intelligent and want to please so quite straight forward to train. H is my first dog and with advise from trainers I've managed! Lol!

One thing I would consider is my GSP gets VERY cold out for long periods in this weather.

Long coated lurcher. , sight hound x = lurcher
My friends husband goes beating n ferreting n he's got two small whippets ( both related to mine lol ) ,,tougher than u think they are ?

Also what about vizslas or pointers
Don't know much about them but they always look good fun

I'd have to say this is nonsense. I doubt dogs that aren't KC registered will be health tested, my number one priority. It is a myth that KC dogs are full of problems and mongrels/cross breeds are much healthier. Do some research on this. It's a popular theory, wish people would do the research.

Pointer
Vizsla
Springer
Working cocker
Labrador

Someone on here was going to start gun dog training with their Dalmatian.

Really? Mine is always nice and toasty, even in all of the snow and ice.
I don't think I've seen him ever shiver or look cold and tucked up and he's 9 this year.
Maybe because mine is so high energy, he is always on the move so doesn't stop to get cold?

We bought him a coat when we bought the dobe one but he refuses to wear it and spends the whole time trying to rip it off so it has been hanging up on a coat hook for the last 7 years! :)

Lol militiger! H had 2 rugs on last week!!! He's fine when were out walking or in the fields, but if we are pottering in the barn so he can't run around and play (he's not allowed to play on concrete after he snapped a nail and it took months to heal!!!!) he will shiver. A couple of days ago he was shivering as he waited for me to lock my front door!!! Big woose!!!!

I'd have a look at rescue dogs. My 2 are both rescue (1 is a lab and 1 is a staff/collie x). They have been the best dogs we have had :)
