slightly random post....

why do most dogs have floppy ears and not pointy ones?

Why do they crop doberman ears (or used to maybe they don't so much anymore?) and not rotties, could they just not have crossed a pointy eared dog into the breed

Selective breeding has bred in longer and longer ears which flop in some breeds (like spaniels...pretty far along the family tree from wolves). Spaniels and bloodhounds etc, from what I understand, were bred with these longer ears to help enhance their ability to track a scent - the ears help to funnel the scents toward the nose. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

At one time they did crop Rotties ears, but that was wayyy back when (have seen old prints with Rotts and cropped ears). Am slightly unsure as to the reason why they docked some breeds but assume that it's to keep them smaller so that when fighting there wasn't as much to grab/rip...similar to why tails are docked in working dogs - less to get injured.

In the UK, it's illegal to crop ears and dock most (I think there's still the ability to dock working breeds for legitimate working dogs). And I don't think that crossing a pointy eared dog (eg German Shepherd) with a floppy eared breed (Dobe) will necessarily get you a pointy eared dog without also changing some of the other traits.

or you get wonderful dogs like the Border Collie who as you can see from my signature can end up with variants of all ear carriage:D:D

booo to the showing people who put chewing gum inside the ears of those that are going full prick to flop them over... boooooo to them i say:mad:

Not that dog genetics think like this but I suppose on the whole pointy ears would be better as long ones esp hairy long ones trap in moisture and leave the dog prone to ear infections (we have one with this problem) but something like a Spaniel with long hairy ears is better protected whilst working the field.

I prefer dogs with "floppy" ears to "pointy" ears

Some dogs have the best of both worlds :)

His mum has floppy ears and we don't know who his dad is, but we thing his mum has a faulty gene she passes on as all her pups (even the pland litter) have pointy ears. But i love him just the way he is :D :D :D

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww I want!!!

As he has been on a chewing fest over the past few weeks - chewing through

A camera lead
Two bicycle hats
One of my skirts
A leather manicure kit
A rug
A CD
A camera book

- there are definitely days when you could have him!!!

But then he gives me his cute look and I think - oh you can stay.

Na that's nothing, we had a dog who chewed the rubber around the window in the snugtop off of the double cab 4x4, same dog chewed numerous pairs of wellies, the rubber from around the washing machine, his own muzzle whilst wearing it in the car to prevent more chewing!! One girl ate the majority of the shed we were using as a kennel, my JRT boy has chewed numerous spines off of books, he's had shoes, his sister (who my friend has) has chewed a hole in the plaster. There are tonnes more lol so that's ok send him over lol
