Dogs worrying my horse - Can the Police do anything about this

Personally I'd worry about reciprocation if you found someone to shoot the dogs while the owners were there watching as what's to stop them coming and doing the same to your horse??

And I'm not sure how many gun owners you'd be able to find who would actually want to come and shoot these dogs while their owners were there, or any farmers who'd want to put sheep in your field while there were known to be dogs running loose.

A horrible situation and horrible dog owners.

I'd try the dog warden first I think.

You are indeed perfectly entitled to shoot the dogs and I would tell the owner so. If you haven't already, tell the police (although Kent police were less than helpful when it happened to me, didn't so much as return a phone call). The dog warden is normally a better bet. Definitely take a camera and witness if you can. Another option is to shoot near, but not at the dogs. The owner doesn't know that you're intending to miss. As a dog and horse lover and having been in this situation I'm afraid I wouldn't hesitate to shoot such dogs now. I recently picked up a sheep's leg from my field, too big for a fox to tackle. I think it's time for zero tolerance to this.

BTW, the BHS are asking for people to report the attacks on horses by dogs - it's a problem that's increasing dramatically and they need the statistics for the police/government to act.
