Pony and i have our first show together on Sunday

On the verge of a nervous breakdown i have just pulled up outside yet another tack shop in the search for the elusive 'much needed' items to finish off our turnout!

Anyone would think we were off to HOYS but as pony was suffering from awful sweetitch this time last year i thought we would never make it to a show

The preprations and worry reminds me of when Queenbee did this - luckily my show is a lot smaller lol

Any last minute prep tips (white pony) or on the day tips much appreciated :)

Right chicken, these are what I like and what worked for me:

1 purple spray
2 wahl diamond white shampoo
3 cowboy stain remover
4 supreme - chalk powder.


When is your show? I would bath a couple if times top to toe in the run up to the show, in the last couple of days hot cloth.

For the baths:
Wet legs, put a good dollop of shampoo in your hand and spray one or two squirts of purple spray on it, mix together and then lather over the leg, work the lather into the legs until the suds turn white, if you don't work until they turn white the legs will turn purple :eek: plus it really helps to lift the dirt. Leave in.

Wet mane and tail, work in the same concoction paying particular attention to the dock and crest to lift the grime. Leave in.

Body, I normally add the shampoo/purple spray to the water then use the foamy suds and a soft bristled brush, I brush this into the body of the horse, giving the bum a really good work, depending on horse I would do the face too (leaving lots if space around the eyes).


2. Hose down from top to toe, I'd then repeat the process on the lower tail, leaving in for another 5-10 minutes. During this time I'd sweat scrape the body and towel dry the legs, check for further stains and spot treat them once with shampoo/spray mix, leaving for a few mins before rinsing.

I'd do this a week before the show and a couple of days before the show, for every other day inbetween I would use the stain remover on hocks and any other bits, ensuring that it doesn't build up. And hot towelling the face to lift any grime.

On the last day, I would hot cloth the entire horse, re wash mane and tail (if not plaiting) and legs, leaving it all in to soak for 5-10 mins. Then do the following:

Once rinsed, spray the mane and tail with detangler product, once tail is dry, sprinkle with powdered chalk, plait into a chunky plait and leave in overnight.

Rinse and towel dry legs, get a pot add some chalk (don't be frugal) get a brush dip it in and apply to legs liberally, bandage legs and leave bandaged overnight.

Get a wet brush and brush body over, then brush a dusting of chalk over the body.

Put on a hoodie, a rug, the bandaged legs and chuck out overnight.



Get some hoof varnish, blacken out the hooves with this... It's much better than oil, ensure you do the insides of the hoof too. What colour are the chestnuts? A lot of people like to blacken these too.

Wet wipe the face on the final day, lifting any last minute scurf and cleaning out the nose!!!

I'm not sure on the turnout for D's but I would remove whiskers if appropriate (using a bic razor for the best finish), trim the beard and ears, ensure hooves are nicely trimmed or shod, the tail and mane whilst 'au natural' should at least be smartened and not too scraggly, it can look natural without looking a mess... And a slight tidy allows you to get rid of any yellow bits at the end.

Remove rug and bandages etc, flick over with a brush to get any loose chalk out, wipe over with a 'coat sheen product', brush out mane and tail adding gloss. Baby oil for face ears and eyes. Wet wipes for corners of mouth, nose, bum... Oh and check for last minute eye bogies.

Eye make up on greys (done modestly can look nice - overdone it looks like drag)

Edited to say, turn out as much as possible in a rug etc, certainly turn out the night before... They stay far cleaner in the field.

How wonderful, no real tips QB cover a lot. Just remember it is supposed to be fun, so just go and have a great day enjoy smile and have fun We will want to see lots of pictures so get someone to get snapping ..............
 
Yes! As EA says... Enjoy!!! As you know I was SUPER worried and stressed about it, having the right kit, prep stuff and ensuring you scrub scrub scrub in advance so you can step off the ramp, touch up and relax... Smile and just soak it up and enjoy! Plus, make sure YOU look the business, thoroughly clean tack/bridle etc.... The night before and wipe over... Including the bit before you go in the ring... Lots of photos too pls x

I did read QB's tips earlier then dropped everything and dragged the pony in for a panic bath lol

He gets bathed weekly anyway and is generally pretty clean. The show is on sunday so he will be bought in for another spruce up tomorrow

Yes, i just used the 'Violet' one with the pump spray you see everywhere

Just added about 8 inches of material to my waistcoat (plus sized my arse) so thats one less thing to worry about

I AM worried about driving a horsebox though!
 
Yes... Gentian violet purple spray... It adds an extra zing, it's the ingredient in purple rinses for old ladies ;)

Op, on the subject of the lorry, have a drive around the block during the week, just for the 'feel'. Decide how much time you need to arrive in advance and add at least 1/2 hr so you do not stress, try to park somewhere that's easy to leave from when you need to go. BREATHE!!! I always like to have a flask of tea and the radio on, it helps me relax. You will be fine, I do worry about driving, but on the other hand I'm in control of my baby in the back... That's a huge bonus, no one loves my horse more than me and therefore no one changes gear as gently as me, no one drives as smoothly as me or treats the cargo in the back as if it were the most precious thing in the world other than me... My dad tows a trailer better than me, but I would trust myself more to pull Ben. Remember what you're carrying, look ahead, breathe, brake and indicate sooner, treat changing gears, braking, turning, like you are handling a china doll and you will be fine x

I have to say that last night at gone 10pm whilst applying another layer of chalk to white socks by the light of a street lamp i was less than impressed with the whole situation!

how did it go did you have fun. Going to wash the white pony tomorrow for the first time this season Big show on the 18th got the purple stuff ready
 
Ariel gel is AMAZING!!!!!! do a patch test just to make sure no reaction, leave on for 10mins & rinse off!! Works wonders on my coloured !

QB i dont know if i'd be brave enough to wash my orses legs in purple spray!! but if it works it works!! may give it a try when we dont have to be seen in public for a while!!
