Hi everyone!

Well I'll try to keep this brief, but you probably know me well enough by now to know that that's probably wishful thinking!!!

Where to start? Well August 15th comes to mind. The day we became pony owners for the first time. And you all stuck by me through thick and thin. From my "should I buy daughter a pony" posts to my "oh my god Dolly has charged into a wall!!!" posts!!! You propped me up when my nerves went to pieces, and you all promised me it'd come right.

I weakened for a few weeks, and started to believe we had made a mistake. That Dolly wasn't "the one". She's a lot of pony for a tiny 9 year old. She still is. But my tiny 9 year old is a lot of child too. She's the most determined person I know. She's shy, quiet and you'd be forgiven for overlooking her. But she's the sort of person that pips people to the post, because they forget about her. She's my hero. Her and her dad. They both said they'd prove me wrong, and I really hoped they would.

Anyway, back on to Dolly!! We've had her over 4 months now, and I don't regret a minute of it. She still has her moments, but I've learnt that they all do. The Dolly that we bought isn't the same pony we have today. Sure she has her quirks, she's still quite food focused, and quite territorial (possibly hang-ups relating to her past) but once that bridle is on she's ready to go! She seems so much happier now, and seems to enjoy her "work".

I can see the bond growing between her and my daughter, and whilst we are all still cautious when we are in her stable, she is a lovely pony to handle and (I believe) to ride! She has a little fan club of riding school children who love to ride her, and this makes daughter feel very lucky.

She has brought so much into our lives, and I love her to bits.

Recently she has done obstacle courses with daughter, and daughter had a fantastic canter round the indoor school last week. All the training by the riding school is really paying off, and we are very grateful for everything they have done for us.

Dolly is beautiful, and such a character. I love her so much, and I love the confidence that she gives my daughter. She (so far!) keeps her safe and that makes me love her all the more.

And of course, there is the lovely red rosette and trophy her and daughter won after only being together 2 weeks!!! That made me happy!

I don't for a minute think we're out of the woods. I've heard winter can be quite trying. But with the help and support of our stables, our friends and your wonderful people on here, I think we'll make it! And come next summer you'll be sick of my updates!!!!!

Funny how some of my worries from a few months ago seem so silly now.

However, can anyone explain to me why I feel the need to shop constantly for rugs now? That I don't understand. I am a goth. I love shoes. And clothes. And tattoos!!! Yet, I'm impressed by "Rambo" rugs and find myself trying to think of reasons why Dolly needs boots!!!! WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o:o:o

And guess what!!! I CAN TACK UP!!!!!! Ohhhhhh yes! Me. On my own. I can!!!! I'm offically daughter's groom now! :D:D:D You should see me girthing up, one buckle first. Then wait a bit. Don't want Dolly to be uncomfortable. Lets go to two buckles now. We can do the third whilst walking into the school. Oh get me! :D Can't pick out feet yet - that's next!

Anyway, I suppose what I'm trying to say is THANK YOU!!! All of you. For your help, advice and support. For believing in us, and for caring enough to want to hear more.

Thank you also to our stables and riding school, for everything. Without them we wouldn't have Dolly.

The update could have been one line, just saying that everything is fine, and Dolly is great. But that would have been boring!!!

Hope you got to here. I have a houseful of stuff for your reward - take your pick!!! Mince pie? Cheese? LOADS of beer and wine :D:D:D

Merry Christmas everyone, from Redmone, mini Redmone, Redmone's sexy bloke (:p) and Little Dolly!!! xxx

:D:D:D

So glad that everything is working out well. I've followed your journey since you first bought her.

There'll still be some not so good days to come and many great ones. Whatever, your lives have changed for ever.

Well done for getting this far.

Merry Christmas and a great new year for you all! :D

Yay - what a lovely post.

I have followed your progress, but not posted as I have not really had anything constructive to add. LOL at the rugs and boots buying :D. This is a tough winter so far. Once you are out the other side of it you'll be laughing :)

Look forward to future updates. Have a happy Christmas and all the best for 2011 :)

I'll have a Coke and a Ferrero Rocher if I may :D :D

So pleased you're all having so much fun. Print it out and frame it - will be good to look back on as the years go by and your hairy collection grows :D :D :D

One coke and Ferrero Rocher coming right up!

How about some wenslydale and cranberry cheese with that! :D

fantastic post, wonderful news :) never posted on any of your previous threads (I don't think) but followed with interest.

so happy for you and your daughter!!

I am so pleased you posted. What lovely news to hear things are going well. Your daughter sounds a star and learning some life lessons that will stand her in good stead....never give up and have faith in yourself.
Dolly sounds like she is coming on well. It does take time to build a relationship but once that bond is there oh my oh my. A well matched beastie and rider are a sight to behold. Sounds like you have it about right with Dolly pushing daughter just enough out of her comfort zone to learn from it but not too much to be scared by it. Well done Dolly she is doing a good job.
Oh and yes the urge to buy rugs and boots happens. I have 3 unused rugs at home that I have had for a few years. Couldn't resist them...oops.
numnahs will be next

So glad you stayed with it, as now you know horse owning is a very big learning curve. But! I do get a hint, now that you know how to tack up and groom, you may start having lessons of your own and a little cob later on????:D:D:D:D:D:D

Yup, 4 months and 4 numnahs!!! What's going on!!!! :D:D:D

And I want a jeep, but that might be because of the snow! :D

Oooooo my own little cob!!! I'd LOVE that! But it has to be a coloured one that's really furry!!! Naw, it doesn't, 4 legs will do :D:D:D

Definately will think about lessons, would like to lose a bit of weight first though - we'll see :D

Having the time of my life with daughter and Dolly though. Best thing I've ever done! :D

I've only just spotted this thread.
Is there any Wensleydale with cranberries left?
I'm so glad that you and daughter are enjoying Dolly. I'm another whose looking forward to hearing about your own lessons..................:D:D:D

I'm another who has read your posts from the beginning, but has never commented as others have always beaten me to it with sound advice for you.
I'm so glad its all working out for you all, your daughter is so lucky to have a mother like you, and you are so lucky to have found such a lovely pony.
I'll raise my glass (whisky and coke please) to many many more happy pony Christmases!

Sounds like a perfectly normal 'baptism' into the world of horses. You survived and you are still smiling -WELCOME!

Thank you!! Funny how when you're worried out of your mind in those early days, all logic and common sense leave you for a while! I cringe at the thought of some of my mad panics now!!!
:o

Well done for all your hard work too!

Thanks!

I learnt how to pick out feet yesterday! Did it again today too :D

Dolly's feet are going to be spotless!!! :D:D:D

I try to set myself a new thing to learn every couple of weeks, then spend a few weeks trying to teach it to daughter. She'll be hopefully be joining "saddle club" next year and be taught anyway, but at least she'll know what to do in advance and how to look after Dolly :)

And it's great fun! :D

Wensleydale and cranberries all gone! Sorry!!

Got mature cheddar and peaches (:eek::eek:) left!!! Not sure about that........

Yeah  I'll do it! I do want to learn to ride but am:

a) bit fat, would like to be lighter first!
b) bit embarrased of looking a berk in front of people I know!
c) bit skint too!!!
:o

well done you for picking dollys feet out :D (my dad only learnt when I hurt my back and couldnt bend down and my mum still cant) I think learning to ride would be a good new years resolution ;) dont worry about looking silly every one does at some point or get a private lesson to start with
did you decide what to buy dolly for christmas??

I was soooooo chuffed with picking out her feet (daft I know, but I was!).

I might start with a ride on the robot horse that the riding school has! At least my shame will be contained to only the instructor then!

We opted for a few apples and carrots chopped up and chucked in with the hay! (I know, not exactly exciting! But we've bought everything new in the past 3 months so we didn't have a lot to buy!!!) Dolly seemed to appreciate it, and it avoided her being nippy with hand feeding. Actually she was a little star and has been wonderful recently.

I think I've been promoted in her herd from absolute loser, not even as good as the steamy pile of poo, to ok - good enough to feed me, but still not as good as a really good scratchy brush! It's progress! :D
