Hi everyone!

Hope you're all well, and warm!!!

OK, well believe it or not we've had Dolly 4 months now! And we're about to have her first Christmas (ok she's had a few before, but we've decided that this is officially her first!!!) :D

So what DO you get a pony for Christmas??? :)

Daughter wants one of those kicky ball things for her stable (I'm not too sold on them, don't know why, just not so keen!).

I've bought her a SHED LOAD of fruit and veg to make her a big bowl up for Christmas Day! I've got apples, bananas (she LOVES bananas!), pears (but been told not to give her too many) and carrots!

Any other ideas for treats, or anything else I could get her instead????

I know it's more for daughter than Dolly, but we're quite excited to go visit her on Christmas Day!!!

PS Everything is going great! Daughter cantered her 3/4 of the school last week, and was about as happy as I've ever seen her! I can tack Dolly up now (but still ask someone to check I've done it right!) and we're all feeling much better about everything.

Dolly was probably the best thing about 2010!!!

Sod the mince pies, bucks fizz and rum balls (;)) in exchange for any good pony pressie ideas!!! :D:D:D

Don't bother with the kick ball. Even our NF who does play with things (like unding the velcro on my shoes) won't play with it.

If you got her a treat ball that would probably be OK since it would reward her with a treat for playing with it...but do you want to feed her treats?

I'd settle on a new numnah or some new brushes or something you need, but I'm spectacularly mean, ours are getting nothing, after all it's just another day to them.

Yeah, I thought the kick ball thing wasn't a good idea! We wanted her to lose weight and she's very food focused (greedy!!) so I didn't think it would help either of those much!!!

I know what you're saying about getting something we "need" but 9 year old daughter wants her get her a pressie! (we're lucky she's not getting a stocking and camping in our living room!!)
:D

Ah just typed a big long reply out and internet went!!!:(

Anyway, pressies!!:D

Ive got for both as ill wrap up for daughter a baby fleece rug with navy binding with Hokus Pokus embroided on it and a matching saddle cloth with Hokus Pokus on one side and daughter name on the other, arrived the other day and look beautifull!!! Maybe a bit late for embroided stuff now for you, but its usefull and a bit special gonna be used for shows.

Could you get a nice new leather headcollar on a new fancy browband. A new fancy saddle cloth. All very usefull but a bit fancy too.

Good news on the cantering, saw on FB they had you must all be chuffed to bits. :D:)

You could get her a treat ball and split a bit of her dinner into it, so she isn't getting anything extra :) .

My boy gets a swede on a string hung up from the rafters of his stable (or the tie up ring also works). He plays with it for ages biting little pieces off.

Or you could get her a mineral lick if she doesn't already have one.

Glad to hear you are enjoying her!

My highland has a snack-a-ball, he is a very good doer. I give him part of his normal food in the ball and put some chaff in as well which makes it take a lot longer to get the good bits out. They can work really well, even for fatties as long as you're not giving anything extra calorie wise :)

Enjoy your first pony christmas :)

Hiya!

Was hoping you'd see this and help me!

Considered the embroidery pressie idea a few weeks ago, but was put off it by a few threads on here (having kids names on stuff threads!). Still think I'll get her a saddle cloth etc... at some point though.

What do you think of the "fruit bowl" idea? I thought at least it's something Dolly will really appreciate!!!

The cantering was brilliant. I know it's something and nothing, but it's been a bit of a sticking point for us. Dolly's been really good at everything else, but really seemed to play up when asked for canter. She seems to be "getting it" now though!!! It was poo when daughter could charge round on a riding school pony, but get on Dolly and it'd go out the window (literally once!!!).

Anyway, it's all good!! Dolly rules!!!!

xxx :D

Oh I like the swede on a string idea! Dumb question, but how do you make it???

Raw swede, cut a hole and thread string through???

She's the best, probably gives me as much pleasure as daughter, and my bum's not been on the saddle yet!!! :D

Thank you!!

Really looking forward to it!! Visiting "our" pony on Christmas Day!! What a dream come true!!!

Lovely to hear from you, and BIG THANKS again! Everything was perfect!!!

I've heard mixed things about likits! Difficult this "trying to be good sensible owner, but still want to buy them all sorts of stupid things" lark!!!!

I'm a permanent lurker on here now!!! It would take a lot to chase me away!!! Glad you missed me :D:D:D

Thanks again! x x x

Yer i saw the threads about the embroidery and it did make me think, but then i had all embroided stuff when i was younger and know loads of people that do do went for it.

Yer shell love the fruit bowl, i always put little treats in Hokies feed as he doesnt get much of it and also theres a farm shop where we are so they have a basket of freebies that cant be sold in the shop but the ponies love!!:D On Xmas day i usually get all the peelings ect (obviously the safe ones) from my dad that hes done the veggies for the christmas dinner.

Also have a trip to the local tack shop they usually have a massive bin at mine for pony xmas treats or little stocking type filling pressies.

xxx:)

my mum got my pony a lickit for christmas and a new head collar and lead rope :D I dont know what I'm getting him yet but he has already been given the lickit (mum couldnt wait). make the most of your first pony christmas this is the first year we have owned aswell :D very exciting

That's an idea, although I've completely obliterated my Xmas budget!!!

Gonna get embroidered stuff for daughter's birthday in Feb I think.

Sounds like fruit's the way forward! What should I avoid??? And what might I not have thought of giving her!!!

It's just great isn't it!!!

I keep wondering when the "novelty" will wear off!!! No sign as yet!!!

Loving it, all of us!!!

And I know this snow sucks, but that makes it even cooler (in a not temperature way!!!) :D

Screwdriver and a hammer - only use I ever get out of either :D . Once you've made a hole right the way through (might need to do both sides if that makes sense) put a piece of baler twine over the head of the screwdriver and poke it through the swede.

Then tie with a quick release knot - I've always been told that horses can get their teeth stuck so you need to be able to untie the string. I have never seen it happen but better safe than sorry ;)

As for your bum in the saddle, I give it six months max :D

Ingenious!!! Right, I'll get OH onto that pronto!!! Thanks! :D

And yes, new years resolution may be to get riding!!! Would like to lose some weight first though. Poor ponies!!!! :o

ha the novelty wont wear off for a long while (mum calls him her grandson  ) mum still finds it more of a novelty as she dosent do the early mornings or wet cold days but is fab have had him a bit longer than you have had dolly remember reading about your problems just as we were getting over ours. I'm not a fan of the snow returning we had just got over the bronking from the last bit would rather not do it again :| but it does look pretty

oh well done to the daughter on the cantering

Yer i always go mad for the pony stuff at xmas, ive got all mine and im supposed to be going to Olympia on Monday so i dread to think what ill come back for her. Yer i do like the embroided stuff and when it arrived im so glad i got it.

The bin at my local tackshop has like 2-3 stuff in just little things but nice for a pony stocking!!!;)

As for the fruit bowl, the usal apples carrots, suede (i usually put a whole one on the floor for him to roll round) parsnips, i dontdo potatoes im sure somewhere ive seen there not safe. Sugar free polos are quite good too. I usually stick to that sort of stuff. I never feed him treats from hands as he was really nippy and nudgy when i got him so im really strick on it, hes either gets them on the floor on in his feed bowl.
Hes has got a snack a ball too, hes been having his extra ration of pony nuts in it in the cold weather and as hes been out for shorter times, but he doesnt really get it once it gets warmer. :)

A nice name plate for her door, perhaps? A fleecy saddle cover? a christmas hat, if you think she will tollerate it? x

We don't tend to 'do' christmas presents for ours, BUT we do put holly outside each stable :D We always have and we have a holly bush overflowing with berries this year! We make sure that the horses can't get to it, it comes down on 12th night and is burnt on the living room fire. Mini Redmone might like the idea?

Dates............... don't worry, they spit the stones out! Really! And a tin of Guinness to put in her tea. Glad all is progressing well! x

Very true! Me and OH just spent about an hour talking about how lovely Dolly is!!! I know we're all soppy over her, and it's probably a bit sad, but we really do love her to bits!

Some of our previous "problems" seem a bit silly now, even though it's only a few months later! Daughter is so happy and confident at the minute, and my nerves are improving! I did have a period of a few weeks where I actually lost MY confidence in handling Dolly for a while (don't tell daughter!!!), and I just asked for help more often, but I'm better now - don't know why really!!! I'm wary, but don't take any cxxp!

Still can't believe WE HAVE A PONY!!!!!!!!!!!
:D:D:D

By fleecy saddle cover do you mean one of those things to keep saddle clean (goes over the top in the tack room - got one of those) or a fleecy numnah sort of thing (quite like the thought of those, but wasn't sure if you could get one for every saddle???).

Also, what about fleecy girth covery thingys (sorry, my terminology hasn't grown that much yet!!!) I like the thought of those.

Thanks!

i wouldnt be hyping her up with sugars...apples/carrots/likkits etc etc

buy her a nice hymalayan rock salt..or a numnah...

as for holly...its very good for them..has anti-lammi properties..the same as nettles

That's what I was concerned about really - lots of sugar and all that.

How about a swede to roll around, and a salt or mineral lick???

I know it's daft to pretend that it'll be a different day for a pony, but it's more for my daughter really! :)

Going to find some holly now too! :D
