I was sent an email about this today, and of course have signed the petition and sent it on. I don't know if it is new, or has been doing the rounds for a while, but if you haven't yet signed, please do. I was horrified and disturbed by what I saw and if this practice is still ongoing I for one would like to be able to do my bit to put an end to it:

There is so much animal cruelty in the world.

We have a petition in Frane with graphic photos of dogs being skinned alive for their skins.

Yet we buy products from countries who are responsible for this cruelty - perhaps it is time to exted ethical trade beyond tea, coffee and chocolate.

Jeez! Can we stop the knee jerk reaction to petitions. In the past week I have been asked to sign petitions regarding a so called dolphin slaughter and to stop a parliamentary scheme that provides MPs with an awareness of the role of our armed forces. I am getting tired of petitions that are so loosely based on fact.

"The shore-based hunters in the Faroe Islands of Denmark continue this practice and it is a community effort for storing whale meat and products for the winter. Pilot whale meat and blubber is considered by islanders to be an important part of their staple diet. The whale meat is never sold, instead it is divided evenly to everyone who wants it. What ever is left over is donated to the local hospital and senior citizens on the island. There is very little of the whale that is actually wasted. The islanders use the blubber for processing oil, the skin for ropes and lines, stomachs for floats, and the esophagus for shoes."

There is really very little difference from the daily slaughter that goes on to provide red meat for tables in the UK.

I think the difference would be on how humanely these animals die. Deaths in whaling and dolphin culling are pretty barbaric and cruel in most cases so unless we are hacking to death or harpooning cows and sheep for our tables then I am afraid I find this 'different' because of the suffering involved. I have no problems with tradition in many cultures but just because it is part of a culture does not mean that there cannot be a move forward in humanitarian treatment of animals.

However the Faroe Islands are deep rooted in tradition so I agree that this is probably just another petition which will have very little clout.

If you are in doubt to how humane this practise is, then please watch the very powerful and upsetting documentary 'the cove'

No the petition is in France the dogs are skinned alive in China and Korea.

Most of our horse rugs are made in China.

French animal lovers have organised a petition.

I thought Brits were familiar with this Paul McCartney and Heather Mills did a great deal to publicise the fact in a BBC documentary.

Yes we are aware of dogs being skinned alive in China. I saw a shocking video once on a welfare charity website and had to stop it after an hour. Its horrifying.

I dont agree with any inhumane practices in any country. Even if it is part of the people's culture etc. If it isnt humane its about time they changed their ways.

Boy cotting Chinese goods is not easy - I believe that Bucaas are the only rug makers who DON'T make in China.

Let us start a campaign to get Horseware Masta etc to stop making rugs in China.

QR This is the way tuna (like dolphins, but uglier and not quite as smart) is killed in some parts of Spain and personally I prefer it to netting - the animals are not caught indiscriminately in nets - the fisherman can spot the candidates and kill them quickly, avoiding breeding females, underage stock etc.

My dad spent a lot of his working life in abbatoirs, the way animals die in slaughterhouses is not *that* far removed. Nor is how lobsters/crabs are killed.
