Done to death but... what to tow with?

I'm sorry if this has been done to death but I am finally at the point where i might just have worn down OH enough to convince him I'm allowed a 4x4! So what should I be thinking of getting?

I'm anticipating having around £2-2.5k and have a short list of the following...

1)Dihatsu Fourtrack
2) Izuzu Trooper short wheel base
3) SWB Shogun
4)SWB Pajero (will have to be old for that money)
5) Discovery
6)Jeep

I know my budget is tight but I know it is feasible and do-able! If anyone has any other suggestions then fire away!

Do any of you tow with any of the vehicles listed above? Does anyone have any experiences, negative or positive to share about them?

I have a nissan terranno, which has been just great. Super towing weight and seats all lie down for other yard jobs. Id recommend one.

Now want something newer and looking at Jeeps/X-trails.

Should also have said - must not be bank breaking to maintain!

Other thing I thought about was it'll be towing a 450 kg small horse, if that has any bearing on the solution.

We had a fourtrak and it was great to tow with. Unfortunately white van man smashed into it, so we then went for an Isuzu trooper, which was also a great towing car.
If looking at troopers, don't buy a 3.0td......they have a real problem with the engine and can blow completely. Go for the older 3.1 or even the 2.8, which is meant to be the best engine! A lot of the trucks have enthusiast forums just like this one and you can get heaps of advice form them, and sometimes vehicles for sale. I think the trooper one is www.itocuk.co.uk....I'll just go and check!

I'm swaying towards the Fourtrack option- but again I don't know which engines and diesel or petrol- logic is telling me diesel- it'll also have to be my car for everyday too so any tips regarding that? Would imagine petrol would be thirsty

l would also have to say Fourtrak would be your best option with your budget. I have been there and owned one. Not the most refined of cars, but definitely the best at towing. Would also recommend diesel as petrol will cost a fortune. They are very, very good at their job though. good luck

Fourtrak every time for me! Just joined the Daihatsu Drivers Club, a bit sad I know, but lots of advise and ideas on there from a friendly bunch!Just look at the Forum for a topical horsey thread.
 
Hi, I have the LWB Mitsubishi Shogun 2.8TD. I love it. It drives lovely and tows my new Richardson trailer with 2x16.2hh+ comfortably. I regularly take my own 17hh horse on her own and it tows brilliant even up hills.
I am selling it in a few months but only for a newer model as I love the Shoguns.
I read that the SWB weren`t as solid to tow with, though not had any experience with this.
Friend had the Isuzu Trooper and she says that it is lovely for towing, but once again, I wouldn`t know personally.
 
I have had my diesel Fourtrak for years and love it. Safely tows 2x big fat hunters in a 510HB trailer. Stick some off -road tyres on it and you will never get stuck in the mud either.
 
i am a fourtrack fan as well!! go for a l reg onwards as they have the better suspension set up and a slightly wider wheelbase, don't touch a petrol, go for the 2.8td everytime, loads of low end torque, will get you out of anywhere, i pulled a 3.5 ton van out of a ditch with mine last week!! it also has the full up 3.5 ton towing capacity. i paid £1100 for my l-reg one!!
 
You've missed the Nissan Terrano's/Ford Mavericks. Mine tow like absolute dreams and drives like a car. Doesn't feel like you're driving such a big vehicle. I have the SWB Terrano and a LWB Maverick. Love them.

Will go and see which Dihatsu I need to be looking at- anyone know what sort of mileage should be ok? Does a high mileage matter?

My defenders for sale if your interested as getting a horsebox so can't really justify keeping a 4x4. will be very upset to see her go was the car I learnt to drive in
