Agree with wagtail and kallibear horses need other horses for company. They are a very social animal and need company of their own kind.
Donkey as a companion or a goat ??

When my boy had company he never seemed to be bothered by his companion.They would not groom each never stood head to tail.
However they would follow each other around he now follows me ;-) We regularly go for a walk through our forest together no head collar no lead rope etc its a very nice feeling
But I want him to be happy !

Not all horses groom etc. It can take years for them to build up their relationship, just as it does with us. You are only company for him for a few hours out of 24. Horses are awake most of the night too and need company then. Lone horses have been proved not to lie down as much as horses with equine companions. Even if your horse does not seem bothered, you can bet that he is. You say yourself that they followed one another around. Sometimes horses are kept alone and occasionally have one equine visitor that comes and goes. This must be terrible for them. Often such horses take a long while to bond with others because they expect that one day they will just go away again.

I'm another who thinks neither. Get a small pony. Donkeys poo just as much as small ponies and goats' poo is messy.

Ems got two mares in the next field for company but loves it when the old nanny goat goes in her paddock with her, they graze head to head and it gives her the confidence to eat up by the scary trees which she wont do alone
that said feed time can be an issue as she doesnt mind sharing food with it, so any additives need to be put at the top of the feed to make sure Em actually gets to eat them, also they appear to have worked out a tag-team style of ninja like sneekyness which they use to creep up and scare the bejeasus out of me, so poo-picking whilst screeching along to my ipod is a now a sumwhat troubling past time!

I think both are lovely animals, but I think from a horses point of view another small pony or a donkey would be better. Do you have any rescue centres around you?
