A friend of mine is buying two 18mth donkey colts as pets for his children. The seller says they shouldn't be castrated until they are three! Is this the case or will they be a couple of handfuls?

Absolute rubbish. They should be gelded as young as possible from about 6 months.

Having recently bought an 18 month old donkey colt I can confirm that they should be gelded as soon as possible - mine showed distinct stallion tendencies with animals and humans alike!
Beware the cost though - mine had undescended testicles (don't know if that's common) which meant general anaesthetic and an overnight stay in hospital - the resulting bill was twice what the donkey cost ...
