A lot of people think that donkeys give horses lung worm , as long as they are worned they shouldn't! They do have some differences though, such as they form strong bonds with others especially other donkeys, they are prone to seedy toe, they are more prone to a condition called hyperlipemia due to the wy they store fat, which is more similar to a camel than a horse!
Your horses will catch NOTHING froma donkey that they won't catch from other horses, and there is absolutely NO reason they should not be kept together.
There os one exception to this, but if you give the donkey a specific type of wormer on arrival, you can forget that too.
It is possible for donkeys to carry lungworms. You need to give a wormer that contains Ivermectin on first arrival and then just use a wormer of the same type as you are using for your horses.
I hope that puts everybodys minds at rest.
Any further donkey related questions, please ask me. I run the forum board of the Donkey Breed Society
We've kept a donkey with horses for the last 21 years, as long as you work for lung worm you will be fine! However for the donkeys sake you should know that they hate wet weather and their coats aren't waterproof like a horse.
Donkeys are certainly far more intelligent than horses, and need to be handled somewhat differently because of this.
Totally true, donkeys do not have waterproof coats and must be supplied with shelter all year round.
With regular farrier visits, regular worming, and careful monitoring of feed, donkeys are really quite easy to care for, and a real joy. I drive all of mine, and it is fantastic fun. They do like to have something to do.
Whoops, just reread my post from last night. That should be "worm for lungworm", not quite sure how you work for lungworm! Not sure if my donk would like to have something to do - he used to lie down after about 5 minutes when he ws ridden! However he does love being groomed and fussed over. My vet once told me about a donkey they had to x-ray. He flatly refused to move close enough to the portable x ray machine, after half an hour of trying to shift him they had to go to a neighbours house and borrow an extension cable and take the machine to the donkey! He was quite happy to be x rayed but no way was he going to move. He wasn't hopping lame or anything - just being a donkey.
