Hi,
I've just had a call about some beach donkeys coming to stay at my yard for a while, i dont know much about donkeys so can anyone quickly fill me in with all of the ins and outs before i call the guy back? He did say that hes aware of the lungworm issue, they are wormed every 8 weeks etc
At the moment, i'm thinking of them having a seperate field from the horses as i have space to be able to do that, any help or advice would be fab

Also - what would consider to be fair rent for donkeys? the same as horses? with a slight discount as there are quite a few??
Thanks in advance

I have a donkey at home, my one lives out in the field with my horses. Do have to be very careful about the worming so maybe seperate field would be a good idea. There pretty easy to keep, don't really like rain but I guess most of them have to get on with it. Mines lucky she has a little rug. There very easy to take care of.

I think having a separate field fromt he horses is a very good idea, since a lot of horses are terrified of donkeys, while others get along quite happily with them.

I would be charging the same as horses with a discount for them having lots there.

We had no problem keeping our donkey with our horses. provided all our wormed it's not an issue. Your main problem will be that some horses can react bizzarely with donkeys and don't seem to know what on earth they are (beings from another planet maybe!).

Others love them to the point of being a bit obsessive though .

I would def say charge the same as a normal horse/pony but be inclined to discount if there are several.

Sounds like your yard's going to become rather lively soon though!

we looked after a seaside donkey over the winter. they took care of the worming - we had a stable for her to go in and provided her with food. she was lovely, no trouble at all. she went in with my old arab mare as i didn't have a companion for her at the time and they got on great.
they also left us a saddle and bridle so my littleun's could ride her.

I keep my donkey on DIY livery, he is in the same field with all the other horses and on the same worming programe, there hasnt ever been a problem and they all get on really well.

Have kept our donkey with our ponies for 22 years. Never had problems with lungworm, just make sure you worm regularly. Donkeys do need to have either a field shelter or a rug as their coats are not waterproof like a horses and they can get very cold and wet when it rains. As suggested above, you will get lots of advice if you contact the Donkey Sanctuary.

Lungworm is RARELY a problem with donkeys these days, as many wormers take care of them. The main thing to remember with donkeys is that they do not have waterproof coats and MUST have access to shelter at all times. They are very very good doeers and any supplementary fibre should be straw rather than hay. You must have a vet and farrier who are familiar with donkeys as the hooves are a different shape and structure and basics, such as TPR, are different to horses.

Thanks everyone, they would be on DIY so i wouldnt have too much really to do with them, the fields we have already have shelters in etc so thats not an issue, it looks as if they dont need anywhere for a while but seems they are going to try and pop down tomorrow to discuss it all.
Thanks for all of the replies
