That's just Donkey Sanctuary rules, which a lot of people think are crazy.
amazing that these charities are so desperate for people to adopt animals but then put so many barriers in peoples way.
Friends parents tried to rehome a dog from one of the local dog charities, it would have been easier to adopt a human! They got one from Romania in the end where there was less red tape (a dog not a human).

Are the DS desperate for people to adopt (as in rehome) their donkeys?
I got the impression they mostly want people to pay towards the donkeys' upkeep on the DS's own premises

Do we know why? Is it just because they live on nothing?

As far as I can see from the DS link it's because "Donkeys are very strong and can cause injury, or even death, to other animals if they do attack them, and therefore it is safest to avoid any incidents that could put animals at risk. " Which seems a bit pathetic, watch out for the killer donkeys. Disclaimer: I know they will chase other animals, but my donkey got on just fine with my ponies and horse, and there are donkeys everywhere doing the same. I can remember several cases of racehorses travelling everywhere with their donkey pals.

Check whether your farrier will take them on. We have a real problem locally as a lot of farriers won't touch donkeys, and a few clients cannot find a farrier at all. At least you will already have a relationship with a farrier so hopefully he'll take your donkeys on.
my farrier does donkeys :)

Honestly! Adopting my other pony was quick, but a process and a half ?

Must admit, when I have, in the past, put horses/ponies in with the donkeys it is the donkeys that are intimidated by the horses, the horses have bullied them, maybe that is why the DS do not like re homing with horses. Smaller animals eg sheep and dogs they have charged at.
Love them - wouldn't be without them!
