Don't feed horses signs - most effective wording?

First and only major bite in 45+ years, TH.

I may not ride that well compared to many but I'm usually pretty good at reading and handling them ...

Didn't see that coming at all. I simply rested my hand on the top of his door while checking he had enough hay.

It did sting a bit.

Ouch! ouch! ouch!

Hope it's healing well Mrs B.... that's a heck of a chunk.

How about DISEASED HORSES, FEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. then underneath
The Owner accepts no reasonability for illness or fatalities caused by touching/feeding these horses

I like the speaking from the horses POV idea for kiddies! Explaining it might make them poorly if they do feed. For adults, it may be good to put a sign explaining the illness and why treats are a bad idea. People tend to take more notice when they know the actual reasoning behind it instead of just seeing a 'don't feed' sign and going 'ahh well it won't make any difference if i give it ONE'.

I'd be wary of putting up a 'this horse bites' or similar - I'm sure i've heard if you have a 'beware of the dog - dog bites' sign in your garden and your dog does actually bite someone then you're liable as you have admitted to having a dangerous dog (even if they're just a deterrent and the dog has never bit before). Whereas if you just have general 'dog in garden' signs and the dog bites you have the argument they've never done it before....

Is there any truth to that??? If there is i'd be careful of the horse bites/kicks signs just incase they do end up getting bitten (argument is that you are admitting the animal is dangerous and YOU should take precautions to make sure no one else is in danger)

Ive been debating putting a sign up as I have a very tubby pony at the moment. Theres a footpath right next to our field and Ive seen a few people feeding ours treats. I know they don't mean any harm but still annoying when trying to keep a tubby pony's weight in check.
I was thinking something along the lines of "please don't feed me as my mummy and vet say I am a little too big and need to loose some weight so I can stay healthy and happy"

I am very doubtful that the explanatory notices will work, having explained, in detail, in person to one elderly gentleman, who was feeding loaves of bread to a cereal intolerant horse, who proceeded to tell me it did no harm and the mare liked it! He was even crossing a field of private land to get to the horses and was oblivious of the horses pushing and barging each other to get to the "treat". I resorted to very unladylike language in the end and to threats of what I would do if I caught him at it again!

Fair do's... I'd be the same. Some people just won't be told!

Did that stop him?

In my experience, people just do what the ******* they want. They think farms are just big playgrounds and that all animals are in a petting zoo. Very frustrating and there's nothing you can do!
